A new Australian device aims to cut the high cost of bidirectional charging by leveraging hardware most solar homes already own, though battery wear remains a key concern.

For electric vehicle owners, the promise of using their car's battery as a home power source has often been overshadowed by the price of the required hardware. Dedicated bidirectional chargers can cost between $6,000 and $10,000, a significant barrier for households that already have rooftop solar. An Australian startup, Merge Energy, is proposing a simpler approach that could lower this financial hurdle by utilizing equipment that is likely already installed in the home.

The company’s prototype, known as the V2G Key, does not require a separate premium charger. Instead, it integrates the vehicle directly with the home’s existing solar inverter. By treating the EV battery as a secondary power source for the inverter, the system allows electricity to flow from the car back into the house or the grid without the need for additional specialized hardware.

Leveraging Existing Solar Infrastructure

The core of this technology is a concept Merge Energy describes as synthetic solar. In this setup, the power stored in the EV battery flows through the household’s current solar system rather than through a distinct, expensive bidirectional unit. This means the vehicle effectively acts as another battery for the inverter. For homeowners, this could mean a much lower upfront cost, as they are not buying a new charging station but rather connecting their current setup to the car.

According to reporting by The Cool Down, this method allows drivers to use stored battery power at home, potentially cutting electric bills and easing demand during peak periods. It also makes better use of the rooftop solar systems many families have already paid to install. The device is designed to seamlessly switch DC power from the EV battery into the existing inverter to power the home and export energy back to the grid.

Battery Wear and Grid Standards

However, the convenience of a lower-cost solution comes with specific trade-offs. The primary concern is battery degradation. Any system that cycles energy in and out of an EV battery will cause wear over time. For the technology to be viable, this wear must remain manageable so that it does not significantly shorten the life of the car’s battery. If the financial savings do not outweigh the cost of potential battery replacement, the value proposition weakens.

Another major open question is regulatory compliance. The system must satisfy Australian grid standards to be approved for widespread use. These technical requirements are likely to shape whether the technology advances beyond the prototype phase. Merge Energy plans to conduct trials in late 2026 to demonstrate that the system can meet these standards while offering the savings and ease of use that EV owners want.

Potential Impact on Home Energy

If this technology proves safe and reliable, it could make vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities accessible to a much larger number of households. Currently, the economics are difficult for many, even those who already own an EV and rooftop solar. A lower-cost workaround could turn parked EVs into flexible home batteries, allowing them to charge when electricity is cheap and help power the house later.

On a broader scale, if more homes can store and shift clean electricity, communities could see lower pollution and greater grid flexibility. While the technology is still in development, it represents a shift toward utilizing existing assets rather than requiring new, expensive infrastructure. This approach could be a significant step toward making home energy systems more resilient and cost-effective for the average driver.
