EV Auto Becomes First Used Electric Car Dealer on Amazon

A Utah-based startup has secured a rare spot in Amazon’s automotive marketplace, marking a shift toward digital transparency in the used electric vehicle market.
EV Auto, a bootstrapped company based in Utah, has become the first independent used electric vehicle retailer to join Amazon Autos. This milestone places the six-year-old business alongside major national automotive brands, signaling a significant shift in how consumers purchase pre-owned electric cars. The company, co-founded by Alex Lawrence and Logan Woolley, has grown from a single Tesla sold from a driveway into a major player with nearly $100 million in annual revenue.
According to GN auto tech/ev: electric vehicle, the invitation to join Amazon’s platform validates the company’s approach to digital, transparent selling. Lawrence noted that the move confirms the industry is moving toward online experiences that prioritize clarity for buyers. Despite its rapid growth, the company remains profitable and largely debt-free, a result of its strategy to avoid venture capital and rely on organic growth instead.
Bootstrapping drives the growth model
Unlike many tech-driven startups that seek large rounds of venture funding, EV Auto chose to self-fund its expansion. Lawrence explained that the founders wanted to retain full ownership and control over their destiny, accepting the trade-off of slower initial growth in exchange for long-term independence. This financial discipline has allowed them to reinvest earnings into new services rather than servicing debt, creating a stable foundation for their expansion into Tennessee and other regions.
The company’s marketing strategy also diverges from traditional automotive norms. Instead of buying expensive advertising, EV Auto built an audience through educational content on social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok. This approach has generated over 10 million organic views monthly, contributing to an estimated $40 million in revenue last year. By answering common questions about battery health and ownership, the company builds trust with potential buyers long before they are ready to purchase.
Education replaces traditional sales tactics
The dealership’s origins lie in a frustrating customer experience. In 2019, co-founder Logan Woolley struggled to buy a used Tesla, encountering scattered listings and salespeople with limited knowledge of electric vehicles. This gap in the market led the founders to build a business model focused on transparency and education. They prioritize clear information on battery health and pricing, aiming to remove the uncertainty that often deters buyers from entering the used EV market.
Lawrence’s background as an entrepreneurship professor at Weber State University further informs this customer-centric approach. He spends his days teaching students to test ideas and analyze customer behavior, then applies those same principles to his business. This continuous feedback loop between the classroom and the company ensures that EV Auto remains adaptable and responsive to market needs, treating every customer interaction as a data point for improvement.
Expanding beyond vehicle sales
While EV Auto has established itself as one of the largest independent used EV retailers in the country, its ambitions extend further. The founders aim to build a multibillion-dollar business that encompasses both vehicle sales and comprehensive electric vehicle services. By leveraging their digital infrastructure and customer trust, they are positioned to offer a broader ecosystem of support for EV owners, moving beyond simple transactions to long-term customer relationships.
