KG Mobility has delivered twenty Musso electric pickup trucks to the Paraguayan government as part of a state-supported pilot program. This move marks a significant step for the South Korean automaker as it seeks to establish a foothold in the Latin American market for eco-friendly vehicles. The initiative is not a standard commercial sale but a structured trial designed to evaluate how these vehicles perform in a specific regional context.

The delivery was facilitated by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy under an Official Development Assistance framework. This program aims to foster industrial cooperation and trade between Korea and Paraguay. By integrating these vehicles into government operations, both nations are testing the logistical and technical feasibility of expanding electric vehicle infrastructure in the region.

Paraguay offers unique energy advantages

Paraguay is considered a particularly promising market for electric vehicles due to its energy profile. The country hosts the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, one of the largest in the world, which generates a massive surplus of electricity. This abundance of clean power reduces the cost and environmental impact of charging electric fleets, making the transition from fossil fuel vehicles more economically attractive for government agencies.

The government plans to use the supplied Musso EVs for both passenger transport and cargo duties within its institutions. This dual-use approach allows officials to gather data on the vehicles' durability, range, and maintenance needs in real-world conditions. The success of this pilot will inform future decisions regarding the broader adoption of electric buses and small trucks in the country.

Delegation reviews production capabilities

A high-level Paraguayan delegation, including Vice Minister of Industry Javier Viveros, visited the KGM headquarters in Pyeongtaek in September. The visit included a tour of the production lines and design centers, where officials observed the manufacturing process for upcoming models, such as the SE-10 concept. The delegation also test-drove the Musso and Actyon Hybrid on the company's proving grounds, noting the performance and quality control measures in place.

According to GN auto tech/ev: electric vehicle reports, the Korea Automotive Technology Institute, which organizes the project, is also planning to establish an Auto Parts Task Center in Paraguay. This center will support the supply chain by managing charging station installation and after-sales services. The collaboration aims to create a sustainable ecosystem that goes beyond simple vehicle sales, embedding local support structures for the technology.

Challenges in market expansion

While the energy potential is high, the expansion of electric vehicles in the region faces inherent trade-offs. Establishing a reliable network of charging stations and trained service technicians is a significant logistical hurdle. The pilot program serves as a test case to identify these bottlenecks before scaling up. KGM officials emphasized that securing stable sales channels and diversifying the supply chain are critical next steps to ensure long-term viability.

The outcome of this trial will determine whether the partnership can evolve into a larger commercial operation. For KGM, the stakes involve validating its technology in a new geographic market and building local trust. For Paraguay, it is an opportunity to modernize its government fleet with lower operating costs and reduced emissions, contingent on the successful integration of the necessary infrastructure.
