Michigan EV Interest Rises as Gas Prices Hit $4.75

As gasoline costs climb in Michigan, more drivers are weighing the financial benefits of switching to electric vehicles, though the savings depend heavily on charging habits.
Gasoline prices in Michigan have reached approximately $4.75 per gallon, prompting a renewed interest in electric vehicles among local drivers. According to data reported by GN auto tech/ev, the number of registered EVs in the state continues to grow, reaching about 112,600 in 2025. While this figure represents a small fraction of the state's total vehicle fleet, which exceeds seven million gasoline-powered cars, the trend reflects a shift in consumer behavior driven by rising fuel costs.
The primary financial incentive for switching is the potential reduction in per-mile driving costs. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that it costs roughly $2.46 in electricity to drive 100 miles in an EV when using typical residential rates. This is significantly lower than the cost of burning gasoline for the same distance. However, this advantage is not universal. Public fast-charging stations often charge higher rates, which can erode the savings if a driver relies heavily on non-residential infrastructure.
Home charging drives cost savings
Experts note that the financial benefit of an EV is most pronounced for owners who can charge at home. Paul Pancella, a physics professor at Western Michigan University, explained that home charging can reduce fuel-equivalent costs to a third or less of what is paid for gasoline. Local drivers report tangible differences in their budgets; one owner estimated saving $2,500 annually on fuel alone after driving 20,000 miles per year.
Maintenance costs also tend to be lower for electric vehicles. Unlike traditional cars, EVs do not require oil changes, and regenerative braking systems reduce wear on brake components. One long-term owner noted that tire rotation was the only significant maintenance performed on his vehicle over five years. These mechanical simplifications contribute to the overall lower cost of ownership, provided the vehicle is charged efficiently.
Infrastructure expands but price remains high
The growth in EV adoption has been supported by an expansion of charging infrastructure. Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy reported that registered EVs increased from 20,000 in 2022 to over 85,000 by mid-2025. Drivers report that the availability of public chargers has improved significantly compared to previous years, reducing the logistical hurdle of long-distance travel.
However, the upfront purchase price remains a significant barrier. The federal tax credit that previously helped offset the higher initial cost of electric vehicles is no longer available for new purchases. This makes the sticker price a critical factor for buyers. Some utilities offer incentives for charging equipment, but eligibility varies. Consequently, the decision to switch requires a holistic view of total ownership costs, including mileage, charging access, and vehicle price.
