iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Differ in Size and Battery

Apple’s newest flagship smartphones share most hardware but diverge in key areas like battery life and modem technology, creating a complex choice for buyers.
Apple has released the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, two devices that look nearly identical on paper but diverge in ways that matter for daily use. According to MacRumors, the new models feature a variable aperture camera and the A20 Pro chip, yet the decision between the two now hinges on physical size, battery endurance, and a subtle hardware difference in cellular connectivity.
The pricing reflects this complexity. The smaller Pro starts at $1,199, while the larger Pro Max begins at $1,299. Both are $100 more expensive than their predecessors, and the gap widens significantly for higher storage options. A 1TB model of the smaller phone now costs $300 more than the equivalent iPhone 17 Pro did last year, forcing buyers to weigh the incremental cost against the specific benefits of the larger device.
Size and weight drive the primary distinction
While both phones share the same thickness of 0.34 inches, their footprints and mass differ noticeably. The iPhone 18 Pro is more compact, standing at 5.91 inches tall and weighing 211 grams. The Pro Max is larger at 6.43 inches and heavier at 249 grams. For users who prefer a device that fits easily in a pocket or hand, the smaller model offers a tangible ergonomic advantage without sacrificing the core experience.
Battery capacity favors the larger model
The most significant functional difference lies in power. The Pro Max houses a 5,391 mAh battery, compared to the 4,056 mAh cell in the standard Pro. This translates to up to 45 hours of video playback for the larger phone, versus 36 hours for the smaller one. If you rely on your phone for long stretches without access to a charger, the Pro Max offers a substantial buffer that the smaller model cannot match.
Modem hardware varies by region and size
A less visible but important difference exists in the cellular radio. Apple uses its own C2 modem in the iPhone 18 Pro globally. However, the Pro Max only uses this chip outside the United States. U.S. versions of the Pro Max instead contain a Qualcomm modem, likely the Snapdragon X80. Apple claims the C2 is more energy-efficient and adds AI-driven reliability improvements, but independent real-world comparisons are still pending. This creates a scenario where the hardware experience depends on both your location and which size you choose.
