After more than a year of rumors, Meta’s next-generation mixed reality headset is starting to take shape. Internal files accidentally left in a recent software update have provided the first clear visual look at Project Phoenix, a device that departs significantly from the bulky form factor of the current Quest 3.

The leaked materials suggest a design that resembles thick smart glasses rather than a traditional virtual reality headset. By using nose pads and temple-mounted sensors, Meta appears to be prioritizing a lighter feel on the face, though this approach introduces new physical constraints that users will need to consider before adopting the technology.

Accidental leak reveals new hardware

The discovery came through a prescription lens package for HorizonOS, which first appeared in August with minimal content. As reported by Android Central, a subsequent update in September included detailed images showing how custom lens inserts attach to the device. These visuals confirm that the hardware is moving away from the immersive, sealed visor style toward a more open, eyewear-like configuration.

Shifting weight to external units

The most significant design change is the elimination of the bulky face interface. Instead, the device relies on a cable running from the left temple to an external compute puck. This trade-off reduces the weight pressing against the user's face but requires carrying a separate computing unit and managing a physical connection.

For developers and consumers, this shift represents a different kind of comfort. While the device is lighter to wear, it is less portable due to the tether. The challenge for Meta will be ensuring that this external hardware feels seamless enough to encourage casual, everyday use rather than feeling like a complex piece of equipment.

Controller-free interaction on the horizon

The leaked files also hint at a move toward controller-free interaction, focusing heavily on hand tracking and prescription setup via QR codes. This aligns with an upcoming session at Meta Connect 2026 dedicated to this technology. If Phoenix is unveiled at that event, it will mark a major pivot in how mixed reality devices are designed and used.
