Worcester Expands EV Charging Network by 75 Percent

The city is adding 22 new charging spots to help drivers without home access, though construction will cause temporary street disruptions this fall.

Worcester is set to nearly double its public electric vehicle charging capacity this year. The city plans to install 22 new charging ports at five different locations, increasing the total municipal network from 30 to 52 spots. According to GN auto tech/ev: electric vehicle, this expansion represents a 75 percent increase in available infrastructure for local drivers.

Construction is scheduled to begin the week of September 14 and continue through December. The new stations are designed to serve residents who lack private driveways or garages, addressing a common barrier to adopting electric vehicles. While the project is funded largely by grants, the city has not disclosed the specific total cost or the breakdown of municipal versus grant contributions.

New chargers target apartment dwellers

The primary goal of this expansion is to make electric vehicles more accessible for people living in apartments or other homes without off-street parking. By placing chargers in public locations, the city aims to remove the reliance on home-based charging. This move aligns with the Green Worcester Plan, which seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, a sector responsible for nearly one-third of the city’s total emissions.

City officials emphasize that these stations will allow more residents to choose electric vehicles without the need for private charging infrastructure. Chief Sustainability Officer John Odell noted that this is a direct way to address climate change while improving city livability. The expansion is particularly significant for those who have previously been unable to adopt EVs due to charging limitations.

Level two speed defines utility

All 22 new ports will be Level 2 chargers. These units are designed for slower, longer charging sessions, typically taking several hours to fully charge a vehicle. This differs from high-powered DC fast chargers, which can replenish a battery in minutes. The trade-off is speed for reliability and lower infrastructure costs, making Level 2 chargers suitable for urban spots where vehicles are parked for extended periods.

Drivers will pay a fee to use these stations, and the city will impose overstay fees to prevent vehicles from occupying spaces after charging is complete. Specific rates have not been announced yet and will be posted at each location. The chargers will be listed in major public directories, such as PlugShare and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center, to ensure easy discovery.

Construction disrupts five city sites

The installation process will bring temporary disruptions to the city. Four of the five locations require work on streets and sidewalks, leading to temporary restrictions on parking, pedestrian access, and traffic. The city expects the most disruptive phase of construction at each site to last only one to two days.

Residents should be aware that no-parking notices will be posted at least 24 hours before work begins. Pedestrian detours will be in place on construction days, and police details may be used if temporary road closures are necessary. The site at Great Brook Valley Park is expected to have minimal public impact, as the six chargers there will be installed within an existing parking lot.
