A Steam user has received a refund for For Honor after Ubisoft blocked all Linux and Steam Deck players from online play. This development is significant because the game was purchased in 2025, well outside the standard 14-day refund window. The user succeeded only after four rejected attempts, citing a violation of consumer rights regarding digital content.

Ubisoft’s decision to ban Linux users was driven by concerns over cheating, but it left many players holding games that no longer function as advertised. While this single refund does not set a binding legal precedent, it highlights a growing friction between platform guarantees and developer policies. The incident puts pressure on Valve to clarify what its compatibility badges actually promise to consumers.

Steam Deck badges lack clear guarantees

Valve’s “Playable on Steam Deck” label is often treated by buyers as a promise of continued support. However, the company has never explicitly stated that this status is permanent. In this case, the user argued that the label implied a guarantee that was later broken by Ubisoft’s ban. When pressed on whether the badge promises ongoing compatibility, Valve did not provide a direct answer, instead offering a one-time exception to their refund policy.

This ambiguity creates a trade-off for consumers. Relying on the badge assumes that the developer will maintain support for that operating system indefinitely. If a developer decides the platform is too small to support, players bear the financial risk. The lack of a clear policy means that refunds depend on individual negotiation rather than established rights, leaving most users without recourse.

Legal arguments drive the refund decision

The user’s successful claim relied heavily on the EU Digital Content Directive, which protects consumers when digital products do not meet promised specifications. By removing online access for an entire operating system, Ubisoft effectively changed the product after the sale. The user argued that this constituted a failure of performance, which would otherwise have been ineligible for a standard refund due to the purchase date and playtime restrictions.

Single case does not set precedent

It is crucial to note that this refund was an exception, not a rule. Valve’s support agents initially rejected the request multiple times, citing standard policy limits. The final approval appears to be a discretionary act rather than a systemic change. Other players in similar situations have not reported consistent success, suggesting that Valve may be handling these cases individually rather than establishing a broad policy for Linux users.

Until Valve defines the scope of the “Playable” badge, consumers must assume that compatibility is only guaranteed at the point of sale.
