The Witcher Chain Weapon Arrives After a Decade of Technical Hurdles

CD Projekt has finally unlocked a long-delayed feature for The Witcher 3, bringing a silver chain weapon to the game after years of technical limitations prevented its implementation.
Geralt of Rivia will soon gain access to a silver chain weapon in the upcoming expansion, Songs of the Past. While the item has appeared in the original 2007 novel and the first game’s opening cinematic, it has remained a non-interactive background element for over a decade. Players have had to settle for the crossbow as their primary ranged tool until now.
The delay was not due to a lack of desire, but rather a significant technical barrier. Jakob Rokosz, the game director for the new expansion, revealed that the team discussed adding the chain during the original development of The Witcher 3. However, they concluded it was impossible to implement at that time due to challenges with the physics engine and animations. It was only during the recent remastering process that the necessary underlying systems were ready to support such a complex weapon.
Physics and animation delays
According to reporting from GN technics/gaming, the specific issues involved making the weapon feel natural and fluid. Rokosz noted that several technological components had to align before the chain could function without breaking the immersion. The team had to ensure that the physics simulation could handle the weight and movement of the chain in a way that matched the fantasy established in the books and early trailers. This required a level of engine refinement that was not available when the original game was released.
A new role for crowd control
The chain is not just a cosmetic addition; it serves a specific tactical purpose in the new content. Senior quest designer Despoina Anetaki explained that the weapon is designed to fit the narrative theming of the expansion. It introduces new enemy types called Swarmions, which are designed to surround the player. The chain allows for effective crowd control, enabling players to keep these swarming foes at a distance.
This mechanic effectively positions the chain as an alternative to the crossbow. Anetaki described it as a cool option for players who may have grown tired of the standard ranged weapon. Like the crossbow, the chain features a time-slowing mechanic when used, allowing for precise targeting. This adds a new layer of strategic depth to combat, shifting the focus from simple ranged attacks to dynamic, physics-based interactions.
Realizing a long-held fantasy
The inclusion of the chain represents a significant step in realizing the original vision for the character. For years, the weapon was a symbol of Geralt’s identity in the lore but absent from the gameplay. By finally implementing it, CD Projekt has addressed a long-standing gap between the source material and the interactive experience. The weapon’s arrival signals that the engine can now handle more complex, fluid animations, potentially opening the door for other previously impossible features in future updates or titles.
