Tomb Raider Reimagining Lets Players Mix and Match Difficulty Settings

The new Tomb Raider game allows players to independently adjust combat, puzzles, and movement difficulty, offering a highly personalized experience for both casual and hardcore fans.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set to give players unprecedented control over how they experience the game. According to the creative director, the title will feature separate difficulty sliders for combat, puzzles, and traversal. This means you no longer have to choose between a challenging puzzle and an easy fight; you can set each element to your preferred level of intensity.
This approach moves away from the traditional single difficulty setting that affects the entire game. Instead, the developers have designed a system where you can tailor your experience piece by piece. If you want the punishing puzzles of the 1996 original but prefer a more forgiving combat system, you can now have both. The goal is to ensure that every player, regardless of their skill level, can find a configuration that feels right for them.
Individual controls for core gameplay
Michał Kuk, the creative director at Flying Wild Hog, explained that the game was built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5. This modern foundation allows for granular control over game mechanics. Players can switch puzzles to a hardcore setting to recreate the classic feel, while simultaneously keeping combat on easy or medium. This flexibility is a significant shift from older titles where difficulty was a monolithic setting.
Kuk emphasized that the system is designed to be intuitive. "You can adjust the game basically however you want," he stated. This includes the traversal mechanics, which govern how Lara moves through the environment. By decoupling these elements, the developers aim to remove the barrier of entry for new players while still catering to veterans who seek a challenge.
A modern reimagining of a classic
It is important to note that this is not a simple remake or remaster. The developers describe it as a reimagining for current-generation platforms. This distinction matters because it allows for new features that were technically impossible in 1996. The ability to customize difficulty is one such feature, leveraging modern game engine capabilities to offer a more nuanced player experience.
The game is scheduled for release on February 27, 2027, across PS5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. As reported by GN technics/gaming (en-US), this release window suggests a significant amount of development time has been dedicated to polishing these new systems. The focus on player agency indicates a desire to appeal to a broader audience without alienating the core fanbase.
Trade-offs and player expectations
While customizable difficulty is a welcome feature, it does come with a trade-off. By allowing players to lower the bar in specific areas, the game may lose some of the inherent tension that comes from a unified challenge. Some purists might argue that the struggle of the original game was part of its charm. However, for most modern players, the ability to dial in the experience is a net positive.
The developers seem aware of this potential criticism, focusing on the idea of personal pleasure rather than strict difficulty. The catch is that this level of customization requires a robust underlying system to ensure that mixing and matching settings doesn't break the game's balance. With the release date still over a year away, players will have plenty of time to see how these systems interact in practice.
