AMD's Budget 3D Cache Chip Undercuts Premium Rivals

A new mid-range AMD processor offers nearly top-tier gaming performance at a significantly lower price, challenging the value of more expensive competitors.
AMD has introduced a new processor that effectively lowers the price of its premium gaming technology. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D serves as a more affordable alternative to the flagship 7800X3D, costing roughly $120 less. This chip targets gamers who want high frame rates without paying for the maximum clock speeds of the top model.
According to reporting from GN technics/hardware (en-US), the performance gap between the two chips is minimal in gaming scenarios. While the cheaper model runs slightly slower in heavy productivity tasks, most players will see negligible differences in actual gameplay. This makes the 7700X3D a strong value option for those building a PC on the current AM5 platform.
Gaming performance remains nearly identical
The Ryzen 7 7700X3D and 7800X3D share the same core architecture and memory features. Both chips feature eight cores and sixteen threads, built on AMD's Zen 4 design. They also include 96 megabytes of 3D V-Cache, a technology that significantly boosts gaming performance by keeping data close to the processor. The main difference lies in speed, with the 7700X3D operating at lower clock frequencies.
In real-world gaming tests, the frame rate difference is often just one percent. In some titles, the gap widens to four or seven percent, but it rarely exceeds that margin. This means that for the vast majority of games, the experience is indistinguishable. The $120 savings represents a nearly 27 percent discount compared to the launch price of the higher-end model, making the cheaper chip a compelling choice for budget-conscious gamers.
Productivity tasks show a modest gap
Outside of gaming, the lower clock speeds of the 7700X3D become more apparent. In single-core and multi-core productivity benchmarks, the chip performs roughly five to seven percent behind its more expensive sibling. This difference is noticeable in tasks that rely heavily on raw processing speed, such as video rendering or complex simulations. However, for users whose primary focus is gaming and general computing, this penalty is often acceptable given the price reduction.
Oversized OLED monitors face GPU limits
Alongside the processor news, the week saw attention on large curved OLED displays. The Alienware AW3926QW, a 39-inch ultra-wide monitor, is priced at $1,099. This is significantly cheaper than comparable models from other brands, which often cost nearly twice as much. The display offers a high resolution of 5,120 by 2,160 pixels, providing crisp text and vibrant colors that are well-suited for both work and play.
However, the monitor has a trade-off. Its maximum refresh rate is 165 Hz, which is lower than many standard 4K gaming monitors that reach 240 Hz. While this may seem like a step backward, the high resolution places a heavy load on graphics cards. Most systems will struggle to maintain high frame rates at this resolution, making the 165 Hz ceiling less of a practical limitation. The lower price and superior text clarity make it a strong option for users who prioritize image quality over raw speed.
