STMicroelectronics introduces new motion sensors without lead or BPA, maintaining high performance for wearables and industrial use.

Key points

  • STMicroelectronics launched new MEMS sensors that contain no lead or BPA, addressing EU material regulations.
  • The LSM6DSK320X and ISM6HGK256X models maintain high accuracy and low power consumption despite material changes.
  • The company is optimizing silicon etching processes to lower the carbon footprint of sensor manufacturing.

STMicroelectronics has introduced a new line of motion sensors that are completely free of lead and Bisphenol A (BPA). These components are designed for devices ranging from wireless earbuds to industrial machinery, offering a way to meet stricter material regulations without sacrificing the accuracy or power efficiency required by modern electronics.

The shift is driven by evolving environmental laws in the European Union, such as RoHS and REACH, which restrict certain chemicals. By removing these substances at the source, the company aims to simplify the compliance process for manufacturers who need to document the materials in their products over long product lifecycles.

Material changes preserve sensor performance

The latest models, including the LSM6DSK320X and ISM6HGK256X, demonstrate that eco-friendly material choices do not require a trade-off in capability. The LSM6DSK320X combines accelerometers and a gyroscope with AI features for motion tracking, suitable for wearables and drones. The industrial variant offers a ten-year lifespan and operates across a wider temperature range.

Manufacturing processes reduce environmental impact

Beyond the final materials, the manufacturing process itself is being optimized. Producing micro-electro-mechanical systems involves etching silicon with reactive gases, a step that contributes significantly to the carbon footprint. STMicroelectronics is working to make these steps more efficient, reducing waste and energy use while maintaining the high quality of the finished device.

Sustainable design simplifies product stewardship

For design teams, selecting components with clear material compliance reduces the administrative burden of tracking regulatory changes. This approach supports a broader strategy of integrating sustainability into the initial design phase rather than treating it as a final check, ensuring that environmental responsibility is a standard part of the product's identity.
