Smartphone screen protectors will soon face stricter regulatory scrutiny in India. The government has mandated that all such products carry compulsory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification before they can be sold to consumers. This rule becomes effective on April 1, 2027, adding screen protectors to the growing list of electronics that require official approval to enter the market.
The move is designed to eliminate sub-standard products and protect users from poor-quality accessories. As reported by Rediff, this regulation is expected to significantly boost domestic manufacturing. Officials estimate that the policy will catalyze a quality-driven industry worth between Rs 12,000 and 16,000 crore, creating a more stable and compliant market for both local and global players.
Compliance deadline set for 2027
Screen protectors are the 66th item to be notified under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods Order. The notification, dated September 21, specifies that products must conform to the Indian standard IS 19348:2025. This joins other mandatory items like smartphones, laptops, and chargers, ensuring a unified approach to quality control across the consumer electronics sector.
Domestic manufacturers expand capacity
Indian companies are already positioning themselves to meet this new demand. Optiemus Infracom, a major player in the sector, is expanding its production capabilities in Noida. The company plans to add capacity for two crore units and expects to start shipments by January 2027. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to capture a larger share of the domestic market while adhering to the new safety standards.
Economic impact and job creation
Industry leaders believe this regulation will create a level playing field for all manufacturers. Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of the Mobile Device Manufacturers Association, noted that the measure will generate around 60,000 direct and indirect jobs. Additionally, it is projected to contribute approximately Rs 2,000 crore in GST revenues. The domestic market for tempered glass screen protectors is currently valued at Rs 20,000 crore, with over 500 million units sold annually.
