Kenya's 52 Million Smartphones Drive a Data-First Mobile Shift

Kenya’s mobile landscape is undergoing a significant structural change as smartphone adoption overtakes feature phones, fundamentally altering how the country accesses the internet.
Kenya has reached a pivotal moment in its telecommunications history, with the number of smartphones connected to mobile networks climbing to 52.26 million by the end of June 2026. This figure represents a 4.2 percent increase from the previous quarter and marks a definitive shift in consumer behavior. While the total number of connected mobile devices grew modestly to 79.68 million, the composition of that base has changed dramatically, with smartphones now accounting for nearly two-thirds of all connections.
The rise in smartphone usage is occurring alongside a steady decline in feature phones, which dropped to 27.42 million connections. This transition is not merely a statistical footnote; it signals a move away from voice-centric communication toward a data-driven ecosystem. Smartphone growth outpaces legacy devices
The trend of smartphones replacing feature phones has accelerated over the past year. Between January and March, the smartphone base grew by over 1.4 million connections, while the feature phone base shrank by more than 1 million. This pattern continued in the following quarter, with smartphones adding another 2.09 million connections. The regulator attributes this uptake to the expansion of 4G and 5G networks, which make smartphones more useful by enabling access to applications, video, and digital payments.
However, the trade-off for consumers is clear: the shift requires a higher initial investment in hardware. While the installed base shows a strong preference for smartphones, cost and availability remain significant barriers for many users. The market is seeing increased pressure on affordable devices and a rise in financing options, indicating that while the demand is strong, the economic burden of upgrading is a major consideration for the average Kenyan consumer.
Broadband expansion matches device adoption
The growth in smartphone numbers is closely tied to the expansion of mobile broadband. Subscriptions reached 54.93 million in June, up 3.9 percent from March. More importantly, mobile broadband now accounts for 85.5 percent of all mobile data subscriptions. This means that the majority of internet access in Kenya is now happening through smartphones rather than older, less capable technologies. The relationship between device type and network usage is becoming increasingly interdependent.
As more users migrate to smartphones, the volume of data traffic is rising sharply. This places additional strain on network infrastructure, particularly as operators try to balance the demand for high-speed data with the need to maintain coverage in remote areas. The result is a market where the growth of the handset base and the growth of broadband access are occurring simultaneously, creating a feedback loop that drives further investment in network capacity.
4G remains dominant while 5G grows
Despite the hype surrounding 5G, 4G remains the workhorse of Kenya’s mobile network. 4G accounts for the majority of data consumption and is the most widely adopted broadband technology. 5G subscriptions have grown to approximately 2.1 million, a significant increase from the previous year, but this still represents a small fraction of the total user base. For most consumers, the practical benefits of 5G are limited by coverage and device availability, making 4G the primary driver of the current data boom.
The catch for operators is that they must continue to invest in 4G capacity to handle the growing traffic from the massive smartphone base, while simultaneously building out 5G infrastructure for the future. This dual-track strategy requires substantial capital and technical expertise. Meanwhile, users benefit from faster speeds and more reliable connections, but they also face the ongoing challenge of managing data costs in an increasingly data-hungry environment.
