Following the recent World Humanoid Robot Games, where machines displayed impressive agility and speed, the People's Liberation Army’s official newspaper urged researchers to fast-track the transfer of these technologies to military training grounds. This call to action highlights a strategic shift where laboratory innovations are being evaluated for their potential to serve as robotic combatants in future conflicts.
A detailed review by Reuters of over 100 documents, including procurement notices, academic studies, and patents, reveals that Chinese defense institutions are actively testing humanoids against specific battlefield requirements. The focus has intensified in 2025 and 2026, with significant investment in robot perception, manipulation capabilities, and the generation of training data. This industrial momentum is bolstered by Chinese manufacturers, who accounted for approximately 95% of global humanoid shipments last year, providing the military with a robust domestic supply chain and access to the latest commercial advancements.
Military Doctrine Embraces Autonomous Assets
The strategic rationale behind this push is grounded in risk reduction. Military engineers and academics argue that deploying robots in hazardous environments can prevent the loss of human life. If a machine can be sacrificed to accomplish a task that would otherwise endanger a soldier, the operational calculus favors automation.
