Arlo is expanding its security suite with new AI features that prioritize urgent threats like fires and intrusions, aiming to reduce the time between detection and response.
Arlo has announced two new artificial intelligence capabilities for its Secure Early Warning System, set to roll out to subscribers next month. The company aims to move beyond simple motion detection by using AI to distinguish between routine activity and high-risk events. This update is designed to help homeowners react more quickly to serious threats without wading through hours of irrelevant video footage.
The new features, named Threat Assessment and Arlo Summary, build on the existing Early Warning platform launched last year. While the original system identified people, packages, and vehicles, these additions focus on context and urgency. The goal is to provide clearer information and faster deterrence measures, allowing users to manage security risks more effectively through their mobile devices.
AI distinguishes urgent threats from noise
The Threat Assessment feature uses machine learning to identify specific high-risk scenarios, such as fires, theft, or armed intrusions. When the system detects one of these events, it can automatically trigger deterrence tools like the camera’s spotlight or siren. In severe cases, the system is designed to facilitate rapid contact with emergency services, breaking through 'do not disturb' settings to ensure critical alerts are not missed.

The second addition, Arlo Summary, addresses the common frustration of scrolling through long camera logs. This feature condenses 24 hours of footage into a brief, plain-language recap. Instead of reviewing individual clips, users receive a textual overview of significant activities, making it easier to spot anomalies or verify that nothing unusual occurred during their absence.
This functionality mirrors similar tools offered by competitors like Ring, reflecting a broader industry trend toward summarizing visual data. For many users, the primary value lies in saving time and reducing the mental effort required to stay informed about their property. By providing a high-level view first, the system helps users decide whether a deeper dive into specific video segments is necessary.
Subscription required for advanced features
These new tools are not included in the base hardware purchase and require an active Arlo Service Plan. Subscribers will need to choose between the Secure, Secure Plus, or Secure Pro tiers, with pricing starting at $7.99 or £7.99 per month depending on the region. This means that the most advanced AI detection capabilities remain locked behind a recurring monthly fee, a standard practice in the smart home industry.
