Google Home Opens Smart Control to Third-Party AI Agents

Google is allowing external AI assistants to manage home devices, but the feature is limited to a premium tier and requires technical setup.
Google Home now permits external artificial intelligence agents, such as Claude, to read data and control connected devices. This capability is available in early access for subscribers in the United States who pay for the most expensive tier of the service. The move extends the role of smart home hubs beyond simple voice commands to more complex, agent-driven interactions with household hardware.
According to reporting from GN technics/smarthome (en-US), the update allows any agent capable of using Model Context Protocol tools to interact with Google’s ecosystem. This includes devices like Nest doorbells, thermostats, and third-party bulbs that support Matter. However, the feature is not available to all users; it is restricted to those on the Google Home Premium Advanced plan, which costs twenty dollars per month.
Agents Gain Broad Device Access
The integration provides AI agents with five specific tools to navigate the home environment. These tools allow the system to identify homes, list rooms and devices, check current device states, execute actions, and search through past event history. In practice, this means an agent could summarize camera footage to describe what children did after school, count laundry cycles over a week, or create custom dashboards for monitoring household activity.
Access to sensitive data, such as facial recognition from security cameras, requires separate explicit consent from the user. The system mandates that the user is a manager of the home, that a compatible Nest camera or doorbell is installed, and that familiar face detection is actively enabled. This layered approach aims to ensure that privacy controls remain with the human owner while still allowing the AI to process visual data for reporting purposes.
Safety Limits and Technical Barriers
Google has implemented strict safety guards to prevent dangerous outcomes. The system explicitly blocks agents from performing sensitive actions like unlocking doors. The company acknowledges that connecting a real-life home to an AI agent can lead to unexpected or undesired behavior, depending on the specific agent used. Users are advised to inform other household members about these capabilities or to set up a separate test environment to verify how the agent behaves before full deployment.
The setup process is designed for technically confident users rather than casual consumers. It does not involve a simple toggle in the Google Home app. Instead, users must create a Google Cloud project, obtain access approval, enable the Home API, and configure OAuth consent screens. For users of Claude, the instructions require setting up a custom connector in Claude Cowork and signing in through a browser. This complexity creates a significant barrier to entry, limiting the feature to developers or tech-savvy enthusiasts.
High Cost and Limited Functionality
The primary trade-off for this interoperability is the financial cost and the current lack of automation management. The Premium Advanced plan is priced at two hundred dollars annually, which is significantly higher than standard smart home subscriptions. Furthermore, the ability to create and manage automations is not yet supported and is listed as a future update. Known issues include experimental device traits that may not work as expected and slower response times than anticipated.
Smart home standards have long promised universal interoperability, but Google’s implementation requires a high level of trust in third-party agents. The combination of a monthly fee, a technical setup process, and limited safety assurances means this feature remains a niche experiment. While it marks a step toward more autonomous home management, it is far from a mainstream, plug-and-play solution for the average user.
