Amazon Leo Secures Six More Arianespace Launches for Satellite Network

Amazon is accelerating its satellite broadband deployment by adding six new launches to its European contract, a move aimed at closing the gap with SpaceX while bolstering the European aerospace supply chain.

Amazon’s satellite division, Amazon Leo, has officially expanded its partnership with the European launch provider Arianespace. The company has added six additional Ariane 6 missions to its existing contract, bringing the total number of secured launches with the European firm to 24. This expansion marks a significant step in Amazon’s strategy to rapidly build out its low-Earth orbit constellation, which is designed to provide high-speed internet to areas where traditional cable or fiber infrastructure is unavailable or too expensive to build.

The move is driven by a need to catch up with the market leader, SpaceX. After facing delays and technical reengineering challenges that pushed its original timeline behind Starlink, Amazon has been under pressure to accelerate its deployment. The Federal Communications Commission recently granted Amazon a waiver from its initial deadline to have half of its authorized satellites in orbit, though the final deadline for the full constellation remains set for 2029. By locking in more European launches, Amazon is diversifying its launch providers to ensure a steady flow of satellites into space.

Enhanced Rocket Capacity Supports Heavier Payloads

The recent Arianespace missions have demonstrated the capability to handle heavier loads, which is crucial for reducing the cost per satellite. The most recent launch deployed 36 satellites, the largest single batch for Amazon Leo to date. This success was made possible by the use of upgraded P160C solid rocket boosters developed by ArianeGroup. These enhanced boosters allow the Ariane 6 rocket to carry up to two metric tons more payload than previous configurations, effectively increasing the number of satellites that can be launched in a single trip.

This technical improvement translates into economic efficiency for the satellite operator. Launching more satellites per rocket reduces the overall cost of building the network. As Amazon prepares for its initial service rollout later this year, having a reliable and high-capacity launch provider is essential. The company has already completed 14 missions since full-scale deployment began in early 2025, placing nearly 400 satellites in orbit. The new contract ensures that this pace can be maintained without the bottlenecks that plagued earlier stages of the project.

European Supply Chain Gains Economic Momentum

The expansion of the Amazon Leo program has a significant ripple effect on the European economy. The Ariane 6 rocket is assembled and launched from French Guiana, but its supply chain is deeply integrated across the continent. According to estimates cited by Amazon, the spending associated with this satellite program will contribute approximately $3.2 billion to the European gross domestic product by 2029. This investment is expected to support an average of 3,270 jobs annually across more than 600 companies in 13 different European countries.

This economic impact positions Amazon Leo as a major driver of activity in the space sector, which has traditionally been dominated by government projects. By securing a large commercial contract, Arianespace has strengthened its position in the global launch market. For European manufacturers and engineers, the steady demand for rocket components and assembly services provides long-term stability and growth opportunities. This symbiotic relationship between a tech giant and a regional launch provider highlights the increasing interdependence of the global space economy.

Broadband Access Reaches Rural Communities

Beyond the space industry, the primary goal of Amazon Leo is to bridge the digital divide in underserved regions. The company is actively participating in the federal Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program in the United States. Arkansas became the first state to sign an agreement with Amazon Leo, which will serve over 1,700 rural locations. This partnership with government funding mechanisms is a key part of Amazon’s strategy to ensure its service is accessible to communities that have been left behind by terrestrial internet providers.

As Amazon and SpaceX compete for a share of the BEAD program, they are expected to collectively serve nearly 900,000 locations across the country. This competition is ultimately beneficial for consumers, as it drives down prices and improves service quality. The catch, however, is that the success of these satellite networks depends on a continuous stream of launches. Any disruption in the launch pipeline, whether due to technical failures or geopolitical issues, could delay service availability for millions of potential customers. The recent contract expansion with Arianespace is a direct attempt to mitigate that risk.
