Avio Launches Satellites to Track Ocean Heat and Plant Carbon Cycles

Two European spacecraft are set for deployment from a Vega-C rocket to monitor environmental changes in the oceans and vegetation.

A Vega-C rocket is scheduled to lift off from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana on Monday night, carrying two critical Earth observation satellites. The mission, designated VV30, marks the second launch of 2026 for the Italian manufacturer Avio and serves as the penultimate flight of the year. The primary goal is to place the Copernicus Sentinel-3C and the Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) into orbit, where they will work together to provide continuous data on climate health.

According to GN auto tech/space: space launch reports, the launch is timed for 10:21 p.m. local time. The Vega-C is a four-stage vehicle standing nearly 35 meters tall. It uses solid propellant for the first three stages and a liquid-fueled upper stage for precision. This configuration allows the rocket to carry heavier payloads than its predecessor, delivering up to 2,300 kilograms to a 700-kilometer sun-synchronous orbit. The increased capacity is a significant upgrade, offering roughly 50 percent more lift than the original Vega rocket, which retired in September 2024.

Monitoring ocean heat and sea levels

The first satellite to be deployed is Sentinel-3C, managed by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites. It is designed to track ocean color, sea-level rise, and topography. EUMETSAT Director-General Phil Evans emphasized that oceans absorb about 90 percent of excess heat from human activities. This data is crucial for understanding how rising temperatures affect marine ecosystems and accelerate sea-level rise. The satellite provides consistent infrastructure for monitoring these vital changes.

The second payload, FLEX, is a smaller spacecraft managed by the European Space Agency. It will use a fluorescence imaging spectrometer to study how carbon moves between plants and the atmosphere. This mission focuses on photosynthesis and its impact on carbon and water cycles. By launching both satellites together, researchers can correlate atmospheric data with vegetation health, providing a more complete picture of the planet's environmental status.

Technical specifications of the launch vehicle

The Vega-C rocket relies on a mix of solid and liquid propulsion. The first three stages use solid motors, while the upper stage, known as the AVUM+, uses a re-ignitable liquid engine. This upper stage is powered by hypergolic propellants, which ignite spontaneously upon contact. The engine is capable of performing up to seven separate burns, allowing for precise orbital insertion. Avio produces the middle stages, while the first stage is developed by a joint venture between Avio and Arianespace.

This launch represents a shift in operational control, as it is the second mission managed solely by Avio without joint oversight from Arianespace. The deployment process is expected to take about 116 minutes after liftoff. Sentinel-3C will separate one hour after launch, with FLEX following nearly an hour later. Both satellites will reach an altitude of 820 kilometers with an inclination of 98.6 degrees. This coordinated deployment ensures that both instruments are positioned correctly for their respective monitoring tasks.

Scientific goals of the dual mission

The collaboration between these two satellites is intentional. ESA Director Simonetta Cheli noted that FLEX operates in a specific spectral range that complements Sentinel-3C. One satellite focuses on the health of vegetation, while the other tracks atmospheric conditions. This tandem approach allows scientists to see how plant responses to climate change interact with broader atmospheric patterns. The data will help researchers understand the carbon cycle and the role of photosynthesis in mitigating climate change.

The mission is part of ESA’s FutureEO program, which aims to advance Earth observation technology. FLEX is the eighth spacecraft in this series. The combined data from both satellites will provide a robust dataset for climate modeling and environmental policy. By monitoring both the ocean and the land, these missions offer a comprehensive view of the Earth's changing systems. The launch is a significant step in maintaining continuous global monitoring of environmental health.
