European Firms Pair up for Next-Gen Infrared Space Sensors

Lynred and Constellr are joining forces to build a large constellation of satellites that will monitor Earth using infrared light. The project aims to balance high-resolution imaging with the practical limits of mass production.
Paris-based Lynred has agreed to supply infrared detectors for a new generation of Earth observation satellites built by Constellr. The partnership is designed to support a broader roadmap that involves deploying several dozen spacecraft over the coming years. These satellites will use thermal infrared sensing to gather data for various commercial and institutional clients.
The first satellites are scheduled for deployment in 2028. Unlike previous projects that relied on single, large instruments, this approach focuses on creating a network of smaller, specialized units. This strategy allows for more frequent coverage of specific areas, although it introduces significant challenges regarding cost, power consumption, and manufacturing consistency across the entire fleet.
Balancing resolution and coverage
The core technical challenge involves managing three competing performance metrics: spatial resolution, swath width, and revisit frequency. Higher resolution provides more detailed ground imagery, while a wider swath allows a single pass to cover a larger area. Revisit frequency determines how often the same location can be observed. Achieving high scores in all three categories simultaneously is physically and economically difficult for satellite designers.
To address these trade-offs, the companies are developing new detector architectures. The goal is to maintain high-quality data output while keeping the systems practical for deployment across a large commercial constellation. This requires careful engineering to ensure that the sensors do not exceed the power and size constraints of the smaller satellite platforms.
Scaling for commercial markets
Constellr intends to use its constellation for applications in defense, security, critical infrastructure monitoring, and environmental tracking. The company selects specific sensor configurations based on individual mission requirements and customer needs. This modular approach allows for flexibility in how the satellites are tasked, moving away from one-size-fits-all payloads.
