SpaceX Tests Starship Orbital Insertion with Real Satellites

SpaceX is preparing a pivotal test on September 22, aiming to place its massive Starship rocket into orbit and deploy 26 functional Starlink satellites. This flight marks a shift from experimental burns to practical mission objectives.
SpaceX is set to attempt a significant milestone in its Starship development program on September 22. The fourteenth test flight will focus on inserting the upper stage into Earth orbit for the first time. Unlike previous tests where the vehicle splashed down in the ocean, this mission aims to circle the planet six times over ten hours. The launch window opens at 7:15 a.m. Central time, subject to regulatory approval.
A key objective of this flight is the deployment of 26 third-generation Starlink satellites. In the previous July test, similar satellites were deployed but designed to burn up in the atmosphere shortly after release. This time, the satellites are intended to reach a stable orbit and use their own propulsion systems to raise their altitude. Success here would mark the first time Starship has reached orbit while also delivering functional payloads.
Engine reliability remains a critical hurdle
The company is addressing issues from the previous flight, where the Super Heavy booster failed to relight all engines during re-entry. Only eight of the thirteen planned engines fired, causing the vehicle to crash into the Gulf of Mexico. To mitigate this risk, SpaceX has implemented hardware changes to improve engine filtering and software updates to enhance relight reliability. The booster is again scheduled for a controlled splashdown in the Gulf rather than a return to the launch pad.
The upper stage has also undergone modifications based on data from its recent recovery. Engineers have added fastening devices to secure heat-shield tiles and reinforced pathways to prevent plasma ingress. Notably, two tiles recovered from the previous flight are being reused, marking the first instance of such reuse in the Starship program. These adjustments aim to protect the vehicle during the high-heat re-entry phase.
Shift from testing to revenue missions
According to reports from GN auto tech/space, this mission could be the first to generate revenue for SpaceX’s launch business unit. While the customers are internal business units within the same company, the deployment of working satellites signifies a transition from pure test flights to operational missions. This move is part of a broader strategy to eventually replace the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets with Starship, provided it achieves reliable weekly launch capabilities.
This flight also serves as the second Starship test since the company’s initial public offering in June. Investors and analysts are closely watching whether SpaceX can achieve the dual goals of orbital insertion and rapid reuse. The outcome will influence the future trajectory of its launch system and its ability to compete in the global space market.
