Google is expanding the capabilities of its most affordable wearable, the Fitbit Air, by rolling out a suite of health features that were previously exclusive to its higher-end Pixel Watch 5. The new features are part of a broader update to the Google Health app, specifically version 5.07.2, where the code for these tools has already been identified. Unlike the Pixel Watch, the Fitbit Air will not support Breathing Emergency Detection, a feature that relies on the screen and notification infrastructure of the larger device. However, the core analytical tools are being made available to the wider user base, signaling a strategic shift to compete more directly with established rivals in the wearables market.

This update puts direct pressure on competitors like Whoop and Garmin, which have long positioned their devices as superior for deep health analysis. Additionally, the inclusion of passive blood pressure trends allows the Fitbit Air to match or exceed the capabilities of the Garmin Cirqa, which lacks similar blood pressure estimation features.

By bundling these tools into a device that costs less than a hundred dollars, Google is challenging the notion that advanced metabolic health tracking requires a high-end smartwatch. The Fitbit Air already offered basic fitness tracking and an optional AI coach, but the addition of these specific health markers elevates it from a simple step counter to a more comprehensive health monitoring tool. This could force other manufacturers to reconsider their pricing strategies or accelerate their own feature rollouts.

Understanding The New Health Tools

The insulin resistance trends feature analyzes multi-week physiological data to identify shifts in metabolic health. Similarly, the blood pressure trends tool uses pulse and motion patterns to estimate long-term changes, but it does not replace the need for regular cuff measurements or medical consultations. The third addition, sleep breathing quality, tracks how much time a user spends in optimal breathing patterns during sleep. Users with the premium subscription can access the Google Health Coach, which uses this data along with other metrics to offer personalized advice. For example, the AI can combine insulin resistance data with nutrition logs to suggest meal plan adjustments. This integration of data points allows for a more holistic view of health, though users should remain aware that the AI’s advice is based on estimated trends rather than definitive medical diagnoses.

Limitations And Practical Trade-offs

Despite the impressive feature set, there are clear limitations to consider. The blood pressure estimation is a passive trend tool, meaning it cannot diagnose hypertension or provide accurate spot-checks. Users still need to visit a doctor or use a traditional cuff for reliable readings. Furthermore, the reliance on an AI chatbot for actionable advice may not suit every user, as the quality of recommendations depends on the accuracy of the underlying data and the user’s willingness to engage with a conversational interface.

There is also a trade-off in device complexity. The Fitbit Air remains a screenless band, which limits its ability to display detailed alerts or interact with the user in real-time compared to a full smartwatch. While it now rivals more expensive devices in data collection, it lacks the immediate feedback loop that a watch with a screen and haptics provides. For many users, however, the combination of low cost and deep health insights makes this update a significant step forward in personal health tracking.
