Nigeria’s electoral commission has completed final readiness assessments for the upcoming federal constituency vote, focusing on personnel training and logistical integrity across three local government areas.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has concluded its final preparatory phase for the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency bye-election, scheduled for Saturday, 19 September 2026. Subsequently, the commissioner visited Mallam Sidi Primary School and Herwagana Primary School, venues designated for the training of Presiding Officers (POs) and Assistant Presiding Officers (APOs).
The assessment aimed to verify that ad-hoc personnel are fully familiar with the commission’s specific guidelines and procedural rules. Gajiram described the assignment as a national duty, emphasizing that the conduct of these officers is central to the integrity of the democratic process. The visits served as a final check to ensure that technical support staff and election officials are prepared for their respective roles on election day.
Emphasis on Personnel Integrity
During interactions with trainees, the Resident Electoral Commissioner underscored the importance of professionalism, impartiality, and integrity. He urged the Presiding Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers to remain strictly neutral and diligent throughout the exercise. According to the commission, the behavior of these ad-hoc staff members plays a pivotal role in maintaining the credibility of the electoral outcome, as they are the primary point of contact for voters at the polling units.
The commission has confirmed that the training phase for Supervisory Presiding Officers, POs, and APOs has been completed. Technical support staff, who received briefings at the Hajiya Amina Inuwa Gombe Women Development Centre, were also assessed for their readiness to provide logistical assistance at designated locations. INEC has reassured the public that all personnel have been charged to uphold the highest ethical standards while discharging their duties.
