Police in South Africa confirmed on Wednesday that at least 11 people were killed in a late-night shooting at a residential gathering in the KwaMakhutha township. The attack, which occurred approximately 30 kilometers south of Durban, also left three other individuals wounded, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the region in recent months.

According to local authorities, three unidentified men entered a house where residents had gathered for a party and opened fire without warning. Ten victims died at the scene, while an eleventh person succumbed to their injuries at a nearby hospital. Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific conditions of the three surviving wounded, and no arrests have been made as a search for the perpetrators continues.

The motive behind the violence remains unclear, though police noted that some of the attendees were known to law enforcement in connection with ongoing criminal investigations. While officials declined to provide further details on these specific cases, they emphasized that the investigation is active and comprehensive. Thami Ntuli, the premier of KwaZulu-Natal province, addressed the media to reaffirm the government's commitment to addressing regional violence. He stated that officials had recently convened to focus on the issue of gender-based violence, promising that the provincial administration would continue seeking structural solutions to reduce crime rates in the area.

Pattern of recent mass shootings

This incident follows a troubling trend of large-scale shootings in South Africa over the past year. According to reports, a similar attack in Johannesburg in June resulted in the deaths of 12 people in a poor neighborhood. Additionally, two separate mass shootings in December claimed a combined total of 21 lives, highlighting a persistent challenge for public safety and law enforcement across the country.

The scene in KwaMakhutha was described as somber, with victims covered in white sheets laid out on the ground outside the small house. Police cordoned off the surrounding neighborhood with yellow tape to secure the area for forensic work.
