A cross-party delegation from the Chilean Senate arrived in Punta Arenas to sign a declaration reaffirming Chile’s exclusive sovereignty over the Magellan Strait. According to MercoPress, the visit marked the 183rd anniversary of Chile’s possession of the waterway in 1843 and included the Senate President and four other members from different political blocs.
The senators emphasized that the strait remains under Chilean control in accordance with international obligations. They stated that the navigation regime is governed by existing treaties, including the 1881 Boundary Treaty and the 1984 Peace and Friendship Treaty with Argentina, which ensure free navigation for all nations.
