Senator John Curtis, a Republican from Utah, has called for a formal congressional inquiry into the foreign business activities of Donald Trump Jr. In a letter addressed to the leadership of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Curtis stated that questions have emerged regarding the president’s eldest son’s relationships with overseas figures and the acceptance of significant gifts.

According to Al Jazeera English, the senator referenced a report by ProPublica which alleged that a Russian oligarch funded the May wedding of Trump Jr and his wife. Curtis argued that such interactions could create perceptions of favorable treatment or national security vulnerabilities, marking a notable instance of a member of the president’s own party seeking accountability.

Rare intra-party challenge emerges

This move represents a shift in the political landscape, as few Republicans have publicly criticized the president since he took office. Curtis noted that the country should not apply different standards to the families of Republican and Democratic presidents. He specifically requested that the committee subpoena both Donald Trump Jr and Hunter Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden, to ensure equal scrutiny.

Hunter Biden responded to the call for testimony on social media, stating he is willing to sit next to Donald Trump Jr and provide sworn testimony. He denied any improper dealings during his father’s presidency and suggested that other members of the current administration, including Eric Trump and Jared Kushner, should also participate in such proceedings.

The letter arrives at a time when Republican support for the administration is fracturing. According to recent reporting, declining approval ratings related to the conflict in Iran and high living costs have prompted some party members to reconsider their stance.
