At least nine people were killed and 53 others injured in Russian attacks across Ukraine over the past 24 hours, according to local officials. The strikes affected multiple regions, including a diesel locomotive near the Polish border and port infrastructure in the south.
In Odesa Oblast, a commercial cargo ship flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda was targeted, resulting in a fire on deck. The ship’s captain, a Ukrainian citizen, was killed in the incident, while the remaining crew members were evacuated, regional Governor Oleh Kiper said.
Widespread drone activity across regions
Ukrainian Air Force data indicates that Russian forces launched 161 Shahed-type attack drones, including jet-powered versions, along with decoy and Banderol drones. Air defenses reported shooting down or suppressing 119 of these aircraft, with strikes recorded at 18 different locations across the country.
Regional governors reported casualties in Donetsk, Kherson, Kharkiv, and Kyiv Oblasts. In Kyiv, drone strikes damaged warehouses and gas stations, killing one person and injuring at least seven others. In Zaporizhzhia, a shopping mall and a residential house were hit, resulting in one death and two injuries.
Warning of impending large-scale strike
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on September 22 that intelligence indicates Russia is preparing a new mass attack against Ukraine. This warning followed a security meeting with U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
Zelensky did not release specific details regarding the anticipated strike or the content of the intelligence reports. The statement comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts, including a U.S.-brokered proposal for a halt to energy attacks, which Ukraine has said it is ready to accept if Russia agrees to similar terms.
Impact on civilian infrastructure
Beyond the maritime incident, attacks in Odesa Oblast targeted warehouses storing medicines, household goods, and food. Kiper noted that it took several hours to extinguish the fires at these sites, highlighting the strain on emergency services and the disruption to essential supply chains.
In Dnipropetrovsk and Zhytomyr Oblasts, additional injuries were reported from strikes on facilities and civilian infrastructure. The Kyiv Independent notes that these incidents reflect a continued pattern of targeting both military assets and civilian economic hubs across the country.
