AI Growth Forces Data Centers to Prioritize Storage Capacity

Artificial intelligence is shifting corporate focus from raw processing power to the massive storage systems required to manage growing data volumes.

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is fundamentally altering what companies invest in for their digital infrastructure. A new survey indicates that nearly all IT leaders expect their storage needs to rise sharply in the coming years. This shift is elevating data management from a routine back-office task to a central strategic concern for businesses worldwide, including those in India.

The report, published by GN auto tech/cloud infrastructure partner Seagate, surveyed over 2,700 technology decision-makers across seven countries. The findings reveal that while 86 percent of organizations have seen some return on investment from AI spending, a significant gap remains in their preparedness. Despite high expectations for increased data demands, only 38 percent of respondents feel fully ready to handle long-term storage requirements.

Storage Becomes the Primary Bottleneck

Contrary to popular belief, the main obstacle to scaling AI is not a lack of processing power. More than half of the surveyed organizations identified data quality and readiness as their top hurdle, while 43 percent pointed to storage infrastructure challenges. These issues ranked significantly higher than compute availability or energy constraints, suggesting that the difficulty lies in organizing and retaining data rather than simply calculating with it.

This reality has pushed data center investment to the top of the corporate agenda. Seventy-six percent of respondents now rank data center upgrades among their top three infrastructure priorities. The industry is recognizing that the value of AI systems depends heavily on how well data is preserved, accessed, and managed over time.

Sustainability Constraints Shape Infrastructure Plans

Energy use and environmental impact are now critical factors in these decisions. Seventy-seven percent of organizations reported delaying or restructuring their AI infrastructure expansion due to sustainability concerns. AI-driven energy consumption and carbon emissions were cited as primary worries, with one-third of companies significantly altering their plans to address these issues.

To balance growth with responsibility, many firms are looking to extend the lifespan of their existing hardware. Ninety-seven percent agreed that longer infrastructure lifecycles improve sustainability. This approach aims to make scaling more efficient and durable, ensuring that data infrastructure decisions are connected to long-term environmental and business value.

Strategic Planning for Future Data Demands

The next phase of AI deployment requires smarter infrastructure choices rather than just massive capacity growth. Companies must evaluate their current readiness for anticipated storage demands and align their investment priorities with both AI goals and sustainability targets. The successful organizations will be those that treat data infrastructure as a core business strategy, ensuring they can effectively organize, retain, and use the data that AI depends on.
