Beijing is accelerating its push for technological self-sufficiency by embedding artificial intelligence agents directly into the semiconductor design process. The move aims to reduce reliance on foreign software and streamline the creation of next-generation chips. According to reports from GN technics/ai (en-US), domestic firms are treating this integration as a critical step in national strategy.

Empyrean Technology, the country’s primary maker of electronic design automation tools, has reported significant efficiency gains. By applying AI agents to simulation and layout tasks, the company reduced the time required for a standard circuit layout from four weeks to one week. This drastic reduction highlights how automated agents are beginning to handle complex design iterations that previously required extensive manual effort.

Shift from manual tool operation

Industry leaders describe this change as a fundamental alteration in how engineers work. Instead of manually operating software tools, engineers now command AI agents that execute the design steps. This represents a move away from traditional human-in-the-loop control toward a system where algorithms drive the process. The goal is to accelerate development cycles while maintaining the precision required for advanced semiconductor manufacturing.

The trade-off involves a significant shift in business models. Traditional software licensing is giving way to consumption-based pricing tied to token usage. This model aligns costs with actual computational work performed by the agents. While this can lower upfront barriers, it requires companies to manage variable costs associated with heavy AI workload usage.

Strategic importance of domestic EDA tools

The push for domestic EDA tools is central to China’s broader self-sufficiency drive.
