Before dawn on August 30, a mechanical participant joined runners in Kuala Lumpur. This Chinese-built humanoid robot completed the full 10-kilometer course of the Malaysia Marathon 2026 without rest or hydration. The event highlighted a broader trend where artificial intelligence moves beyond theoretical demonstrations into practical, physical applications.
The feat occurred shortly after the World Robot Conference in Beijing, which showcased thousands of robotic innovations. According to GN auto tech/robotics, this milestone reflects China's rapid industrial expansion, with its core AI industry valued at 1.2 trillion yuan. The country’s strength lies in its ability to quickly transition ideas from laboratories to mass-produced goods supported by a robust supply chain.
Shifting Focus to Practical Applications
The primary goal is no longer just technological novelty but enhancing human capabilities and solving practical problems. China emphasizes open-source models to lower barriers for other nations, allowing them to adapt technologies without building from scratch. This approach aims to ensure that AI benefits are shared more equitably across different regions.
For Southeast Asia, this shift is timely as the regional digital economy grows. Analysts project the area's digital market could reach 2 trillion dollars by 2030. With a young population and diverse industries, there is significant potential for AI in sectors like agriculture, logistics, and healthcare. However, the benefits are not evenly distributed among the eleven member states.
Addressing Regional Inequalities
Technological readiness varies significantly across ASEAN. Some nations possess advanced infrastructure and skilled workforces, while others are still developing basic capacities. This disparity leads to different national priorities regarding data governance and AI adoption. Cooperation must account for these diverse needs to ensure that technologies fit local conditions and foster resilient supply chains.
Building Collaborative Frameworks
Recent diplomatic efforts aim to bridge these gaps. In 2025, China and ASEAN held their first ministerial roundtable on AI in Nanning. They are currently building an AI Application Cooperation Center to improve infrastructure and develop talent. Additionally, a five-year plan for a sustainable digital ecosystem was adopted earlier this year.
