Sutter Health is deploying artificial intelligence to reduce administrative burdens for doctors and provide personalized support for patients across Northern California.
Sutter Health, a major not-for-profit system serving over 3.5 million patients in Northern and Central California, is aggressively integrating artificial intelligence into its daily operations. The organization has expanded its use of AI in clinical care significantly over the last few years, aiming to streamline workflows and enhance the quality of care delivered to its diverse patient base.
This push includes the opening of a new innovation center in San Francisco, which serves as a hub for collaborating with tech firms on digital health applications and remote monitoring. The system is also acting as a West Coast testing ground for medical technology companies, seeking to leverage AI for faster disease detection and more efficient medical reporting.
Reducing administrative burden for clinicians
A primary focus of these initiatives is alleviating the heavy administrative load that often distracts doctors from direct patient care. Sutter Health is utilizing ambient scribes and chart summarization tools that automatically document patient encounters. This technology allows physicians to spend less time taking notes and more time engaging with patients, potentially reducing burnout and improving the human element of medical visits.
In January, the system expanded its partnership with Aidoc to use AI for reviewing radiology scans. The technology flags potential issues in imaging and produces preliminary drafts of reports, allowing radiologists to focus on complex cases. Additionally, a partnership with OpenEvidence provides physicians with a specialized search engine to quickly access evidence-based clinical answers, ensuring they have accurate information at their fingertips during consultations.
Patient access and data privacy
Beyond supporting staff, Sutter Health is rolling out a patient-facing chatbot that allows individuals to interact with their electronic health records at any time. This tool helps patients understand new symptoms or identify the correct care team member to consult. By keeping this interaction within the healthcare system’s infrastructure, the organization aims to maintain strict data privacy protections, offering a safer alternative to using general public AI tools for medical questions.
Training the next generation of doctors
Looking toward the future, Sutter Health announced plans this spring to launch the Bay Area’s first new medical school in over a century, in partnership with Santa Clara University. The curriculum for this new institution will center on emerging AI technologies, preparing future physicians to use these tools effectively. According to Ashley Beecy, the system’s inaugural Chief AI Officer, the goal is to make the medical profession more efficient and accurate by embedding AI literacy into the foundation of medical education.
