BMW iX3 Captures a Third of European Electric Vehicle Orders

BMW's latest electric SUV has reached a significant milestone in its first year on the market, claiming a substantial share of the European electric vehicle landscape.
One year after launching its redesigned iX3, BMW reports that the model has secured over 100,000 orders across Europe. This figure represents roughly one in three electric vehicle orders the company has received since the launch. The strong uptake marks the best first-year start for a new BMW model in the company's history, signaling a potential shift in consumer preference toward its newer electric platform.
The iX3 accounts for approximately half of all orders for the broader X3 lineup, indicating a significant transition from internal combustion engines to electric power in this segment. Jochen Goller, who oversees global sales and brand management at BMW, described the initial demand as a fantastic start for the new vehicle class. This momentum is not limited to Europe; the model also saw strong pre-order activity in China shortly after its local launch, suggesting a global appetite for the updated design and technology.
New platform drives performance gains
The iX3 is the first vehicle built on BMW's Neue Klasse, or new class, architecture. This new foundation introduces a sixth-generation electric drive system that relies on an 800-volt electrical grid. The shift to this higher voltage architecture, combined with advanced cylindrical battery cells, allows the vehicle to charge significantly faster than its predecessors. BMW states that these technical upgrades result in a 30 percent improvement in driving range and charging speed compared to the first generation of its electric vehicles.
For drivers, the most tangible benefit is the reduction in time spent at charging stations. The iX3 supports direct current fast charging at up to 400 kilowatts. This capability enables the battery to go from 10 to 80 percent charge in approximately 21 minutes. While specific range figures vary by model and testing standards, the technology aims to reduce range anxiety by making top-up times more comparable to traditional fueling stops, a critical factor for daily usability.
Pricing and global market rollout
In Germany, the entry-level iX3 40 is priced starting at 63,400 euros, with a tested range of 628 kilometers. The more powerful iX3 50 xDrive starts at 73,925 euros and offers a range of up to 805 kilometers. In the United States, the 2027 model year iX3 50 xDrive is expected to start at 61,500 dollars, with an estimated range of 434 miles. These price points position the vehicle as a premium offering, competing directly with established electric vehicles from Tesla and BYD in the mid-size SUV category.
The success of the iX3 is crucial for BMW as it seeks to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market. The company plans to expand this new platform to additional models, with the i3 sedan already seeing stronger-than-expected demand. By the end of 2027, BMW intends to introduce 40 new or updated vehicles that utilize this new technology and design language. This broad rollout suggests that the iX3 is not just a single model launch, but the beginning of a wider transformation of the brand's entire product lineup.
