Hyundai Seeks Fake Engine Braking for Electric Cars

A new patent filing suggests Hyundai wants to mimic the feel of a gasoline engine in its electric vehicles by using regenerative braking to simulate gear-based deceleration.

Hyundai has filed a patent for a system that allows electric vehicles to simulate engine braking, a feature traditionally associated with gasoline cars. The technology aims to make the driving experience feel more connected and engaging for drivers who miss the mechanical feedback of internal combustion engines.

While electric cars already use regenerative braking to slow down and recharge the battery, this new approach adds a layer of complexity. It calculates how a gasoline engine would behave in specific conditions and applies a corresponding amount of braking force, creating a more nuanced response to driver inputs.

Simulating Mechanical Feedback

The system builds on the virtual gear shift feature found in models like the Ioniq 5N and Kia EV6 GT. These cars use software to create the illusion of multiple gears and rev limits. The new patent takes this a step further by linking the braking force to the simulated gear and speed, mimicking the deceleration felt when a gasoline engine is in a lower gear.

According to reports from GN auto tech/ev: electric vehicle, the system would adjust regenerative braking intensity based on the virtual engine speed. If a driver shifts to a lower virtual gear while closing the throttle, the car would slow down more aggressively, similar to how compression braking works in a petrol car. This is designed to make the car feel more responsive and alive.

Regenerative Braking Redefined

Many electric vehicles already offer one-pedal driving, where lifting off the accelerator slows the car significantly. However, this is usually a fixed setting. The proposed Hyundai system is more dynamic. It uses real-time data on vehicle speed and virtual engine load to determine the appropriate level of braking, rather than relying on a static preset.

This distinction matters for driver engagement. While standard regenerative braking is about efficiency and convenience, the new system is about sensation. It attempts to replicate the physical feedback of a transmission engaging, which many enthusiasts argue is a key part of the driving experience. The trade-off is that this is purely software-based; there is no physical gearbox to engage.

Patent Limits and Future Use

It is important to note that a patent filing does not guarantee that the technology will appear in consumer vehicles. Companies often file patents to protect intellectual property, even if they have no immediate plans to use the technology. Therefore, this feature may remain a theoretical concept for the foreseeable future.

Nevertheless, the move highlights a broader trend in the electric vehicle industry. Manufacturers are increasingly focused on making EVs feel less like utilitarian machines and more like performance-oriented cars. By adding layers of simulated mechanical interaction, they aim to bridge the gap between the silent, instant torque of an electric motor and the tactile engagement of a traditional drivetrain.
