California Signs New Laws to Speed up EV Charger Rollout

Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a new legislative package aimed at accelerating California’s transition to electric vehicles by simplifying the process for installing charging stations. The measures target specific bureaucratic bottlenecks that have historically delayed the deployment of public infrastructure and limited access for residents in multifamily housing.

According to reporting from ca.gov, these laws seek to make the adoption of clean transportation more practical for everyday Californians. The core objective is to reduce the time and cost associated with getting new chargers online, thereby expanding consumer choice and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Removing barriers to charger installation

One significant change modernizes the inspection process for public chargers. Previously, outdated regulations could delay a charger’s opening even after it had been tested by the manufacturer. The new rule allows these pre-tested units to go live faster while maintaining safety safeguards to ensure drivers receive the correct electricity supply.
