Rivian R2 Production Slows Ahead of Quarterly Report

Rivian's production pace for its new R2 SUV has slowed significantly in the final stretch of the third quarter, raising questions about whether the company can meet its annual delivery targets.
Rivian has assigned over 12,100 vehicle identification numbers to its R2 SUV, according to data from owner-run trackers. This figure represents the highest serial number linked to the community site, indicating a steady but decelerating build rate. The count rose by roughly 700 units in the last nine days, a slower pace than the previous two weeks when the total increased by 2,000 units.
This production data arrives just days before Rivian releases its official third-quarter results. However, the company has historically avoided disclosing model-specific delivery numbers, reporting only a combined total for all its vehicles. Consequently, the exact number of R2s that have reached customers remains an estimate, with third-party analyses suggesting a significant gap between vehicles built and those actually delivered.
Production Numbers Mask Delivery Delays
A vehicle identification number is assigned when a car enters the build slot, not when it is finished or handed over. Data from eletric-vehicles.com highlights this disconnect, showing that of the 1,124 linked R2s, only 554 have been delivered. Another 368 are still on order, and 147 have a delivery date booked but have not yet been picked up.
The wait time for customers has improved recently, with the median period from ready-for-pickup to actual delivery dropping to 19 days. This is a twelve-day reduction compared to the previous month. However, the overall pipeline remains long, with many buyers still waiting for their vehicles to be completed and shipped.
Official Reports Lack Model Detail
Rivian's upcoming quarterly report will provide a single global delivery figure that includes all its models, from the R1S and R1T to the commercial vans. The company has never broken down these numbers by specific model, making it impossible for investors and analysts to verify R2 performance directly from official sources.
External estimates offer a clearer picture. Cox Automotive data suggests that approximately 789 R2s reached US buyers in the first three weeks of sales. Since then, the model has ranked fourth among electric vehicles in Colorado registrations, though overall Rivian sales in the US dipped slightly in August. The company aims for 20,000 to 25,000 R2 deliveries this year, a target that depends heavily on resolving current supply chain bottlenecks.
Supply Chain Limits Ramp Up
Rivian executives have stated that the production ramp is currently constrained by tier-two and tier-three suppliers rather than the manufacturing plant itself. The company plans to add a second shift at its Normal, Illinois facility by the end of the quarter, but this will not significantly increase volume until the fourth quarter.
All current R2s are the Performance version with the Launch Package, priced from $57,990. Cheaper trims, including the Premium and Standard Long Range models, are scheduled for release later this year and in 2027, respectively. This limited configuration means buyers are currently choosing only between specific color and wheel options, with Catalina Cove and Launch Green being the most popular exterior colors.
