Dongfeng Nissan Prepares Revamped N7 Electric Sedan

Dongfeng Nissan is set to unveil an updated version of its N7 electric sedan on September 22, aiming to reverse a sharp decline in monthly sales that has seen demand drop from over 10,000 units to under 1,000 since the model's launch in April.
Dongfeng Nissan, the Chinese joint venture for Nissan Motor, plans to launch the updated N7 electric sedan on September 22. The move comes as the company seeks to stabilize sales for a model that initially challenged domestic rivals with aggressive pricing but has since seen a significant drop in consumer interest. Local media reports suggest the refresh will involve adjustments to the vehicle's configurations, though the manufacturer has not yet released official details.
The current N7 entered the market in late April 2025 with a starting price of 119,900 yuan, roughly $17,760. This price point was designed to compete directly with models from Chinese startups like Xpeng. While the initial strategy attracted attention, the model's market position has weakened considerably as the competitive landscape in China's electric vehicle sector continues to shift rapidly.
Sales Decline Reflects Market Pressure
The N7’s commercial performance illustrates the intense pressure facing joint venture brands in China. Data compiled by CnEVPost shows that retail sales peaked at 10,148 units in August 2025. However, figures for August of the current year indicate a steep drop to just 928 units, with wholesale volumes even lower at 619 units. This trajectory highlights the difficulty of maintaining momentum in a market dominated by rapid innovation and price competition.
The N7 was the first Dongfeng Nissan model designed and developed entirely by a Chinese team, built on the company's Tianyan architecture. It features two single-motor options rated at 160 kW and 200 kW, offering a range between 510 and 635 kilometers under the CLTC cycle. Despite these technical credentials, the model has struggled to sustain its initial sales surge.
Technology and Competitive Positioning
The vehicle incorporates several advanced features intended to appeal to tech-savvy buyers. Its assisted driving system was co-developed with local startup Momenta, and the cockpit includes AI large language models such as DeepSeek-R1. These specifications were part of the strategy to position the N7 as a modern, capable sedan in the mid-price segment, directly competing with established domestic players.
Dongfeng Nissan has continued to expand its lineup beyond the N7. The brand launched the N6 plug-in hybrid sedan in December and the NX8 extended-range electric vehicle in April, which secured thousands of orders within the first hour of its release. The fourth model, the NX7 plug-in hybrid SUV, recently completed its regulatory filing, indicating a broader push to diversify the N series portfolio.
Strategic Shift in Product Lineup
The updated N7 launch is part of a larger effort to accelerate the rollout of the N series. Cumulative production of these models reached 100,000 units in June, just 14 months after the N7's debut. By adjusting the N7's configuration, the company aims to reassert its value proposition in a crowded market where competitors are constantly updating their offerings.
According to GN auto tech/ev: electric vehicle, the upcoming changes are expected to address the specific gaps that have contributed to the recent sales slump. As the September 22 launch date approaches, attention will turn to whether the refreshed model can regain the market share it lost during the first year of its availability.
