New Fast Chargers Ease Range Anxiety in Nassau County

Drivers in Nassau County no longer need to calculate every mile before hitting the highway. Sixteen new direct current fast chargers have been installed at two busy commercial locations, offering a much faster alternative to the slow charging options that previously dominated the area.

The addition of these stations directly addresses a common frustration among electric vehicle owners: the fear of running out of power with no reliable way to recharge. By placing high-speed infrastructure in high-traffic zones, the new setup makes it easier for drivers to top up their batteries during routine errands rather than treating charging as a time-consuming ordeal.

Speed changes the charging experience

The primary benefit of the new hardware is time. Traditional level two chargers, which are common in residential and commercial settings, can take several hours to move a battery from 20 percent to 80 percent. In contrast, the new direct current fast chargers can accomplish the same task in roughly twenty minutes.

This speed is crucial for daily usability. Installing direct current fast chargers is significantly more expensive than setting up standard level two units. To make these projects viable, the installer utilized a rebate program from PSEG Long Island. This financial support covered approximately half of the total project costs, amounting to nearly one million dollars for the two sites.

According to the installation partner, this subsidy was the deciding factor in the project's timeline. Without the rebate, the financial burden would have been too high to complete the work within a reasonable timeframe. The program effectively bridges the gap between the high upfront cost of fast charging infrastructure and the long-term benefit to the community.

Strategic placement near daily stops

The locations were chosen specifically for their convenience. One site is the Nassau Mall in Levittown, surrounded by major retailers like Best Buy and Kohl’s. The other is a Home Depot in Elmont, situated near popular restaurants and a Target. This placement ensures that drivers are already in the area for other reasons, making the twenty-minute charging window a natural part of their day.
