Red E Charge Launches Hands-Free Plug and Charge System

A Detroit-based network is removing the need for apps and cards at select stations, though the rollout is partial and setup remains a one-time hurdle.
Charging an electric vehicle in the United States often involves a series of digital hurdles, from scanning QR codes to navigating smartphone interfaces. Red E Charge, a Detroit-based operator, is attempting to simplify this process with the launch of Red E Go. This new feature allows drivers to plug in and leave, with the system automatically handling identification and payment without requiring a credit card swipe or app interaction at the moment of charging.
The service is designed to eliminate the friction of manual transactions at the station. However, the convenience comes with a specific trade-off: users must first complete a one-time configuration within the network’s smartphone application. During this setup, drivers link their vehicle details and payment method to their account. Once this initial step is completed, the phone and wallet can remain in the car, as the charging station recognizes the vehicle automatically upon connection.
Partial Rollout Across Large Network
While the technology promises a seamless experience, it is not yet available everywhere. According to GN auto tech/ev: electric vehicle reports, Red E Go is currently live only at select locations rather than the entire network footprint. The operator manages more than 1,500 sites and approximately 4,600 ports across 46 states. This includes over 2,100 fast-charging ports and nearly 2,500 Level 2 ports, but drivers must verify station compatibility before expecting the hands-free feature to work.
Growth Momentum Behind the Brand
Despite being less recognizable than some competitors, the network has shown significant expansion. Recent industry data places Red E as the fourth-largest network for direct current fast charging growth in the second quarter. It added 315 new ports, outpacing major rivals like Electrify America and EVgo. This growth trajectory suggests that the company is investing heavily in infrastructure to support features like Red E Go, aiming to capture a larger share of the growing electric vehicle market.
Performance and Pricing Variations
The charging experience itself varies significantly depending on the specific station and plug type used. Output ranges from a slow 10 kilowatts to a rapid 640 kilowatts. The network supports multiple standards, including J1772, CCS1, NACS, and CHAdeMO. Pricing is dynamic, ranging from $0.40 to $1.15 per kilowatt-hour. While customer satisfaction scores are solid, they still trail behind top-tier networks like Tesla’s Supercharger, indicating that reliability and speed remain key areas for improvement.
