Volvo ES90 Redefines the Space of Electric Sedans
Volvo's new flagship attempts to merge the comfort of a sedan with the practicality of an SUV, promising a smoother ride and more interior space, though it comes with specific trade-offs in seating ergonomics.
Volvo has unveiled the ES90, a flagship electric vehicle designed to dissolve the traditional boundaries between sedans and sport utility vehicles. By enlarging the body while retaining the driving dynamics of a sedan, the car aims to offer the best of both worlds. The model boasts a drag coefficient of 0.25, the lowest in the brand's history, which contributes to its efficiency and stability at speed.
During a recent media test drive spanning approximately 110 kilometers from Seoul to Pocheon, participants noted that the car's character shifts dramatically based on driving settings. In standard mode, the vehicle feels like a comfortable midsize SUV, requiring minimal effort for steering and acceleration. However, switching to performance mode sharpens the responses, making the car feel more planted and aggressive, a duality that surprised many journalists.
Suspension Tuning Adapts to Road Conditions
The dual-chamber air suspension plays a central role in this adaptability. On the high-speed sections of the route, the system lowers the ride height by up to 18 millimeters to reduce air resistance and improve stability. When encountering rougher terrain or irregular national roads, it raises the suspension by up to 30 millimeters to filter out impacts. This active adjustment helps minimize body roll, even in a vehicle that is over five meters long.
An off-road mode is also available, which automatically raises the ride height and activates speed control for deceleration when traveling below 40 kilometers per hour. This feature is rare in conventional sedans and underscores Volvo's intent to give the ES90 genuine utility beyond its sleek exterior design. The result is a car that feels secure and composed whether it is cruising on a highway or navigating winding mountain passes.
Interior Space Offers Practical Compromises
The ES90 leverages its long wheelbase and flat floor to provide exceptional rear legroom. An adult of average height can sit with ample knee space, a significant advantage over many competitors. The trunk utilizes a liftback design, offering a base capacity of 409 liters that expands to 1,445 liters when the rear seats are folded. An additional 27-liter storage compartment under the hood adds further utility for smaller items.
However, the high floor level in the second row presents a trade-off. While knee room is generous, the elevated seat base can prevent thighs from making full contact with the cushion. Some test drivers noted that this geometry might lead to discomfort during long journeys, suggesting that while the space is vast, the seating ergonomics are not universally ideal for all body types.
Safety Systems Intervene Proactively
The safety assistance suite demonstrated a high level of proactive intervention during the test. In one instance, the vehicle executed an emergency stop when a parking attendant was standing in the reversing path, giving hand signals to direct the car. The car remained stationary until the driver confirmed the situation and pressed the brake pedal again. This behavior highlights a system that prioritizes caution over convenience, which may require some adjustment for drivers accustomed to more permissive automation.
