For consumers, this means that the entry point into the smartphone market is becoming more expensive, effectively raising the barrier to ownership for budget-conscious buyers.

Budget phones lose market share

A primary driver of this shift is the declining popularity of entry-level devices. In 2025, smartphones priced under $200 accounted for over 40% of all shipments. However, this segment is rapidly shrinking, with projections indicating that by 2027, these affordable models will represent less than 26% of the market. Conversely, the premium segment, defined as phones averaging $800 or more, is expanding. This segment is expected to grow from 21% in late 2025 to nearly 29% by 2027, indicating a clear consumer preference for higher-end features and build quality.

Rising component costs impact pricing

Manufacturers are passing increased production costs directly to consumers. The price of key components required to build modern smartphones has risen, forcing companies to adjust their pricing strategies to maintain margins. Major brands, including Samsung, are expected to raise prices across various product lines. This cost escalation makes the mid-range segment, which once served as a bridge between budget and premium options, increasingly difficult to sustain at previous price points, further pushing the average selling price upward.

Longer device lifespans reduce upgrades

Another significant factor reducing the need for new purchases is the extended lifespan of current smartphones. Modern devices now receive software updates for up to seven years, significantly outpacing the typical three-year refresh cycle of the past. This longevity alleviates the urgency for users to upgrade, as their existing phones remain secure and functional for longer periods. As a result, the frequency of replacement purchases is decreasing, contributing to the overall contraction in unit shipments despite the higher price per unit.
