Following a high-profile robotics competition, Chinese defense officials are pushing to integrate humanoid machines into military training and urban combat scenarios.

The global robotics scene recently watched machines dance, box, and sprint faster than elite human athletes at a major competition in China. While the public celebrated these impressive displays of agility, Chinese defense officials saw a different future. Two days after the event, the official newspaper of the People's Liberation Army called for a rapid shift of these technologies from laboratories to military training grounds.

A review of procurement notices and academic studies indicates that China is actively preparing humanoid robots for potential wartime deployment. This push follows the manufacturer's dominance in the global market, which accounted for nearly 95 percent of humanoid shipments last year. The goal is to adapt these commercial machines for specific battlefield roles, moving beyond simple demonstrations to practical military utility.

Military integration gains momentum

Defense institutions are currently testing these robots against specific battlefield requirements. The focus has intensified in recent years, with research concentrating on how the machines perceive their environment, manipulate objects, and process training data. According to reports from GN auto tech/robotics sources, the aim is to have these units working alongside human troops rather than replacing them entirely. This represents a significant step from the entertainment-focused displays seen at the games.

This development mirrors trends seen in other conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, where autonomous drones have transformed reconnaissance and logistics. By leveraging an existing commercial supply chain, the military can access hardware more quickly than if it were developed from scratch. However, the transition from a controlled stage to a chaotic environment is not guaranteed to be smooth.

Urban warfare concepts take shape

A recent study by researchers at the National University of Defence Technology outlined a specific scenario for urban combat. The proposal involves using six combat robots, including humanoids and robot dogs, to clear enemy-occupied buildings floor by floor. The machines would work with ground troops to enter rooms and neutralize threats. This concept is projected to be feasible within the next five to ten years, relying on improvements in balance and endurance.

Experts suggest that the bipedal design offers a unique advantage in tight spaces like tunnels or ship interiors. The ability to use two hands and two feet allows for climbing and manipulation in ways that wheeled or tracked vehicles cannot easily replicate. This makes them potentially useful for tasks that require navigating complex, human-made structures.

Significant technical limitations remain

Despite the strategic interest, there is no evidence that an armed humanoid robot has been deployed with an operational military unit. The machines remain energy-intensive and unreliable outside of controlled demonstrations. Battlefield environments are unpredictable, posing challenges that current robotics struggle to handle. For simpler tasks like logistics, cheaper quadruped or wheeled robots are often the more practical choice.

The core trade-off involves cost and reliability versus versatility. While humanoids can theoretically navigate complex terrain, their current limitations in endurance and unpredictability make them high-risk assets. Until these technical hurdles are resolved, the gap between the impressive dance floor performances and actual combat utility will likely remain wide.
