Apple has released tvOS 27 for the Apple TV 4K, bringing a redesigned Podcasts app and new music features. However, the update skips the advanced AI assistant and smart download tools, likely reserving those for future hardware.

Apple has begun distributing tvOS 27 to owners of the Apple TV 4K. The update introduces a modernized Apple Podcasts app and new capabilities for Apple Music, allowing for smoother song transitions and higher audio fidelity. According to reports from 9to5Mac, the software is compatible with all Apple TV 4K models except the first generation, while the older Apple TV HD remains unsupported.

For users who prefer managing their devices from a single point, the update adds a convenient shortcut. You can now install tvOS updates directly from your iPhone using the Home app. This removes the need to navigate the Apple TV interface with a remote control, streamlining the maintenance process for those who keep their TV box tucked away in an entertainment center.

Music and podcast experience improves

The most visible change is in the Apple Podcasts app, which adopts a design similar to the recent iOS update. It features sidebar navigation and fully supports video podcasts, making the living room a viable space for this format. Apple Music also receives two distinct upgrades: AutoMix, which creates DJ-like transitions between tracks, and Hi-Res Lossless Audio for those with compatible external speaker systems.

Accessibility has also seen a meaningful boost. The update introduces Dynamic Type, a feature that allows users to adjust text sizes systemwide. This is particularly useful for viewers who sit farther from the screen or have difficulty reading smaller fonts, ensuring that menus and subtitles remain legible without needing to lean in closer.

Missing features signal future hardware

Despite the improvements, tvOS 27 lacks the new Siri AI assistant that has been discussed in recent rumors. Only the traditional Siri is available in this release. Industry speculation suggests this omission is intentional, as Apple is reportedly preparing a new Apple TV 4K model with the specific hardware required to power the more advanced AI capabilities.

Another notable absence is the Smart Downloads feature, which was mentioned during Apple’s developer conference. Since tvOS has not previously supported downloading TV content, the lack of this feature in the current update is significant. It remains unclear whether this tool will arrive in a later software patch or if it is strictly tied to the upcoming hardware refresh.

Performance tweaks focus on speed

Beyond new features, Apple claims that tvOS 27 delivers underlying performance gains. The update is designed to make AirPlay connections faster, animations smoother, and app launches quicker. These changes aim to reduce the wait times between selecting an app and starting playback, addressing a common friction point in smart TV usage.

The trade-off for these performance enhancements is a continued reliance on existing hardware limitations. Users with the first-generation Apple TV 4K will not receive this update, effectively excluding them from the new music and podcast features. This reinforces the idea that Apple is steering users toward newer hardware to access the full range of its software ecosystem.
