Elon Musk claims SpaceX will send NVIDIA's latest AI hardware into space next year, arguing that orbit will soon become the cheapest place to run massive computing workloads.

Elon Musk has set a bold timeline for moving high-performance computing off the ground. In a recent post on X, he stated he is highly confident that SpaceX will transport NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin NVL72 AI systems into orbit next year. This announcement ties together two of the most significant names in the current technology landscape, linking the rocket company’s launch capabilities with the chipmaker’s latest hardware.

The plan centers on the Starmind program, which aims to build data centers in space rather than on Earth. The first satellite, designated Starmind AI1, is expected to carry a specialized version of the NVIDIA rack-scale system. While the standard terrestrial units combine 72 GPUs and 36 CPUs, the specific configuration for the orbital version remains undisclosed. SpaceX intends to launch this initial unit in the fourth quarter of 2027, with a goal of reaching substantial scale by 2028.

Space as a Cheaper Computing Location

Musk’s central argument is economic. He suggests that within two to three years, space could become the lowest-cost environment for AI computing. His reasoning relies on the availability of solar power in orbit, which he argues makes the architecture simpler, lighter, and denser than traditional ground-based data centers. This approach removes the need for extensive cooling infrastructure and real estate, potentially lowering the total cost of ownership for massive AI clusters.

However, the industry is not unanimous in its support. Brad Smith, President of Microsoft, has publicly questioned the feasibility of this timeline. He told reporters that he would be surprised if companies actually transferred computation from land to low-Earth orbit. The debate highlights a significant divide in the tech sector over whether the physics and economics of space-based computing will align quickly enough to challenge established terrestrial infrastructure.

Market Reaction to the Announcement

The news has already rippled through financial markets. For NVIDIA, the prospect of space-based computing represents a new source of demand for its hardware. Analysts estimate that SpaceX already accounts for about 5% of NVIDIA’s revenue. If the orbital plan succeeds, it could open an entirely new market segment for the chipmaker, adding to its strong position in on-premise AI infrastructure.

For SpaceX, the stakes are higher and the risks are more visible. The plan depends entirely on the success of the Starship rocket system, which must prove it can handle the required launch frequency and reliability. When Musk first mentioned this exclusive partnership with NVIDIA during SpaceX’s August earnings call, NVIDIA shares rose more than 4%. In contrast, SpaceX shares initially fell more than 10%, reflecting investor concerns about the high capital intensity and execution risks involved in building infrastructure in space.

Despite the hype, the trade-off is clear. Investors in SpaceX are betting on a future where orbital logistics are as routine as air freight. If Starship fails to deliver on reliability, the entire Starmind concept stalls.
