Blackline Safety Expands G8 Wearable Adoption
A Calgary-based firm is seeing rapid uptake of its new safety device, which merges gas detection with live tracking to help managers locate workers in crises.
Blackline Safety, a company based in Calgary, is reporting strong early adoption of its G8 connected safety wearable. The device began shipping in March and combines several critical functions into a single unit. It handles gas detection, protects lone workers, and enables two-way communication. This integration aims to reduce the complexity of carrying multiple separate tools on industrial sites.
The hardware connects to the Blackline Live platform, which provides safety teams with real-time visibility into worker locations and conditions. According to the company, every second matters when a worker is in distress. The system is designed to give managers immediate information about what is happening, where the individual is located, and how to reach them quickly.
Geofencing supports emergency response
Customers are showing particular interest in the device's push-to-talk features and ZoneAware geofencing. This technology allows organizations to define specific worksite zones and monitor movement within them. Such data supports emergency response planning and evacuation procedures. It also helps companies maintain compliance with safety regulations by tracking who is in high-risk areas.
New sensor targets hydrogen risks
To address specific regional needs, Blackline has introduced a low-range hydrogen sensor for North American customers. This add-on is CSA-certified, a standard often required in industrial settings in the region. It allows facilities working around hydrogen gas to integrate specific detection capabilities directly into the G8 ecosystem without needing additional standalone hardware.
Global deployment spans many sectors
The technology is already being used in more than 75 countries. One notable adopter is Vida Bioenergy, a European bioenergy producer. The company selected the platform to provide gas detection, lone-worker protection, and communications for employees and contractors at a new plant. This deployment highlights the device's utility across different energy sectors and geographic regions.
The system has generated over 336 billion data points and initiated more than eight million emergency alerts. These metrics suggest the technology is handling a significant volume of critical incidents. Blackline will demonstrate the G8 at the National Safety Council Safety Congress and Expo in Indianapolis from September 14 to 16, 2026.
