The new AI model is arriving, but finding it is not as simple as a button click, and it burns through your data allowance faster than its predecessors.

OpenAI has begun rolling out GPT-6 Astra, its latest advanced model, but access is far from universal. Despite the flashy name, the model does not appear as a distinct option for most users. Instead, it is embedded within existing plans, creating a confusing landscape where the same technology hides behind different labels depending on your subscription tier and the specific application you are using.

For many, the rollout is a waiting game. Even if you pay for a premium tier, the model may not be immediately visible. Engadget notes that this gradual release means eligible accounts might not see the option today, and OpenAI has not provided a specific timeline for when every user will have access. This phased approach creates an uneven user experience where availability fluctuates between the standard chat interface, the work suite, and coding tools.

Finding the model is tricky

If you are on a Pro, Business, or Enterprise plan, the model appears as GPT-6 Pro rather than Astra. You must look under the Pro category in the model picker within a standard conversation. Enterprise users face an additional layer of complexity, as access also depends on specific workspace permissions set by administrators. For Plus subscribers, the situation is even more fragmented. You will not find it in the main chat window. Instead, you must switch to the Work section on the web or mobile app, or use the Codex tool, to select Astra directly.

If you still cannot find it, the issue may be technical. OpenAI advises manually checking for app updates, as the rollout is happening in stages across different platforms. Work is being updated separately from the main chat, so you might have access on one interface while it remains hidden on another. This disjointed rollout requires users to navigate multiple menus and check for updates repeatedly to ensure they are on the latest version.

Your usage allowance will drain faster

Beyond the difficulty of finding the model, the primary catch is how quickly it consumes your data limits. OpenAI warns that GPT-6 Astra uses allowances more rapidly than the previous GPT-5.6 Sol model. The speed of consumption depends on the complexity of the task, the amount of context provided, and the reasoning required. A simple question will use less, but a complex coding assignment or a request requiring deep analysis will burn through your limit much faster.

The specific numbers vary by plan. Plus users can expect roughly five to 45 messages per five-hour period when using the model locally in Work. The $100 Pro plan allows for 25 to 225 messages, while the top-tier $200 plan provides 100 to 900. These are estimates, and the actual limit resets based on your usage history. To manage this, OpenAI suggests keeping prompts focused and defining output formats clearly to avoid unnecessary back-and-forth that wastes tokens.

Privacy and cost considerations remain

There is also a privacy nuance for those using the Work feature. Even when the model runs locally with your files, OpenAI states that messages and task context may still be stored in the cloud. This is a significant trade-off for users who expected local processing to mean complete data isolation. For developers using the API, the cost structure is also aggressive, with higher rates applied to requests that exceed 272,000 input tokens, effectively doubling the cost for large-scale operations.

As you navigate this rollout, it is crucial to monitor your usage dashboard regularly. The model is powerful, but it is not free in terms of resources. By understanding where to find it and how it impacts your limits, you can avoid frustration and unexpected restrictions. The key is to reserve Astra for tasks that truly require its advanced capabilities, rather than using it for every query.
