BMW Begins Local I7 Production in India at High Price

BMW has started assembling its top-tier electric sedan in Chennai, making India the second country to build the flagship model, though the high entry price and limited options present distinct challenges for local buyers.

BMW has expanded its electric vehicle production footprint to India by beginning local assembly of the i7 flagship sedan in Chennai. This move ends the car’s exclusive production run at the automaker’s Dingolfing factory in Germany, establishing India as the second country to build the model. The locally assembled i7 eDrive50 xDrive M Sport carries a starting price of approximately $206,000, with customer deliveries scheduled to begin in October 2026.

The decision to localize production reflects BMW’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on imports for high-margin vehicles in key markets. According to GN auto tech/ev: electric vehicle, the Chennai plant, which has been operational since 2007, will now produce eight nameplates including the new i7. This addition underscores the facility’s growing importance to BMW’s regional operations, even before the flagship model arrived on its production lines.

High Price Tags Limit Market Reach

The entry price for the Indian market is significantly higher than in other regions, creating a steep barrier for potential buyers. While the entry-level i750 xDrive is priced at $107,750 in the United States, the broadly comparable eDrive50 xDrive in India costs roughly double. This disparity is driven by import duties, luxury taxes, and logistics costs, even with local assembly trimming some of the premium associated with fully imported vehicles.

The trade-off for local assembly is a limited choice of variants. The India lineup drops the diesel 740d and plug-in hybrid options previously sold in the region, leaving buyers with only two choices: the petrol-powered 740 M Sport and the fully electric i7. The range-topping M70 xDrive continues to arrive fully assembled from Germany at a higher price point, highlighting the split between locally built and imported inventory.

Updated Technology and Battery Performance

The new i7 models incorporate technology from BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse platform, including a sixth-generation eDrive system with cylindrical battery cells that improve energy density by 20 percent. The eDrive50 xDrive features a single rear motor producing 455 hp and a 112.5 kWh battery rated for 728 kilometers on the WLTP cycle. Both variants support DC fast charging at up to 250 kW, allowing a 10 to 80 percent charge in 28 minutes, and include a complimentary wallbox for home charging.

Global Manufacturing Strategy Shifts

India is not the only location where BMW has expanded electric vehicle assembly beyond Germany. The plant in Debrecen, Hungary, builds the electric iX3 alongside the combustion X3, with production volumes rising significantly in recent months. The addition of i7 assembly in Chennai extends this regional manufacturing pattern to BMW’s costliest model, indicating a structural shift in how the company distributes its high-end production capacity.

This strategic move comes amid varying market pressures globally. In China, BMW recently cut prices across more than 30 models to compete with local rivals, while in India, the focus remains on premium positioning through localized production of select high-end models. The differing approaches highlight the complex balance between cost reduction, local content requirements, and brand positioning in diverse automotive markets.
