Major automakers are reintroducing small gasoline engines into electric vehicles to address range anxiety, a strategic pivot that trades pure electric purity for practicality in the US market.

Stellantis and Ford are preparing to launch extended-range electric vehicles in the United States that pair battery power with a small gasoline engine. According to a report from GN auto tech/ev: electric vehicle, these models drive on electricity but use the engine solely as a generator to recharge the battery. This approach aims to solve the primary barrier slowing EV adoption: the fear of running out of charge before reaching a station.

The strategy represents a significant shift in how these companies view the electric pickup segment. By combining battery drive with onboard generation, the vehicles offer a safety net for long-distance travel. However, this dual-system design introduces complexity and cost, creating a trade-off between flexibility and price for consumers.

Solving Range Anxiety with Generators

The core appeal of these extended-range models is the elimination of charging stops during long trips. Stellantis plans to introduce an extended-range Jeep Grand Wagoneer and a Ram 1500 REV later this year or early next. The Ram model is projected to offer a combined range of roughly 690 miles using both battery and fuel. This capability is particularly relevant for towing, a scenario where conventional electric trucks often see their range drop sharply.

Ford intends to bring back the F-150 Lightning as an extended-range version, targeting buyers who were previously deterred by the limitations of battery-only trucks. The gasoline engine allows the vehicle to recharge its battery while driving or while stationary with a heavy load. This design attempts to provide the instant torque of an electric motor without requiring the driver to plan meticulously around charging infrastructure.

High Costs and Market Uncertainty

Despite the practical benefits, the strategy faces significant financial hurdles. Engineers and analysts expect these vehicles to cost more than comparable gasoline models and potentially more than some full-electric competitors. The added complexity of maintaining both a high-voltage battery system and a combustion engine drives up manufacturing expenses. If consumers are unwilling to pay this premium for the flexibility, the high investment in tooling and production lines may not be recouped.

Market reception remains uncertain. Plug-in hybrids have historically captured only a small share of US vehicle sales, suggesting that buyers may still prefer conventional hybrids or pure gasoline trucks. The success of these new models depends on whether drivers value the extended range enough to justify the higher price tag and the added mechanical complexity.

Investors Show Cautious Stance

Financial markets are responding with caution to this pivot. Data indicates that hedge funds have reduced their exposure to Stellantis ahead of this launch. The number of holders dropped from 32 to 26 in the second quarter, with the combined position value nearly halving to $195 million. Ford’s holder count remained steady, but the value of those positions dipped slightly. This withdrawal suggests that institutional investors are skeptical about the immediate profitability of these mixed-powertrain strategies.

The broader trend shows a pullback from legacy and mixed-powertrain bets among major institutional players. While the technology offers a logical solution to range anxiety, the market is waiting for evidence that consumers will actually buy these expensive, complex vehicles in the volumes necessary to justify the automakers' investments.
