Geely EX2 Enters UK Market with Aggressive Pricing

The Geely EX2 challenges established rivals by offering a compact electric hatchback at a price point that undercuts many mainstream competitors in the UK market.
The electric car market in the United Kingdom is currently seeing a significant influx of models from Chinese manufacturers, each attempting to carve out a niche in a crowded landscape. Among these contenders, the Geely EX2 has emerged as a particularly notable entry due to its aggressive pricing strategy. Priced between £20,990 and £25,490, this vehicle positions itself as one of the most affordable new electric cars available, a feat achieved without relying on the UK government’s plug-in grant scheme.
While the EX2 is a recent arrival for UK consumers, the model is already a proven success in its home market. In China, Geely sold over 465,000 units in 2025 alone, suggesting strong demand for this specific design and feature set. The car’s appeal lies in its simplicity and cost-effectiveness, though it requires buyers to accept certain compromises in charging speed and optional equipment to keep the initial price low.
Affordability drives the initial appeal
The primary selling point of the Geely EX2 is its entry-level price tag. At just under £21,000, it undercuts many European rivals that often start well above the £25,000 mark. This makes it an accessible option for buyers who want to transition to electric driving without a significant financial jump. The low cost is achieved by offering a streamlined set of features and a smaller battery capacity compared to larger, more expensive models.
However, this low price comes with specific trade-offs. The vehicle is equipped with LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries in two sizes: 35kWh and 47kWh. While LFP chemistry is durable and cost-effective, it is generally less energy-dense than the nickel-cobalt alternatives found in premium EVs. Buyers must also consider that a heat pump, which improves efficiency in cold weather, is not standard and must be purchased as an optional extra.
Practicality within a compact footprint
Despite its modest exterior dimensions of 4.14 meters, the EX2 offers surprising interior space. The cabin is designed to accommodate four average-sized adults comfortably, a feat that rivals often struggle to achieve in the sub-compact segment. This practicality is further enhanced by standard vehicle-to-load capability, allowing the car to power small external devices. This feature adds a layer of utility for users who work from cafes or need to power tools, though it remains a niche benefit for most daily drivers.
Range expectations are modest but sufficient for urban and suburban commuting. The smaller 35kWh battery provides a WLTP-rated range of 155 miles, while the larger 47kWh option extends this to 214 miles. For most city dwellers, these figures are adequate for daily needs without requiring frequent charging stops. However, long-distance travelers should plan carefully, as the range is lower than that of larger battery-equipped competitors.
Charging speed meets basic needs
The maximum charging rate for the EX2 is 80kW, which is standard for its class but not exceptional by modern standards. Nevertheless, the small battery size works in the car’s favor regarding recharge times. It can charge from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes, making it viable for quick top-ups during short breaks. This performance is consistent with the vehicle’s positioning as an affordable, urban-focused electric car rather than a high-speed highway cruiser.
According to GN auto tech/ev, the Geely EX2 represents a calculated move into the UK market. By prioritizing low upfront cost and basic practicality, it appeals to a broad audience of first-time electric car buyers. The trade-off is a lack of high-end technology and slower charging speeds, but for many, the savings and simplicity of ownership may outweigh these limitations.
