GoSun Unveils Solar-Charged Electric Tractor for Small Farms

An Ohio-based startup has introduced an all-electric utility tractor designed to reduce fuel costs for small-scale farmers, featuring a roof-mounted solar array that can extend operational runtime without grid dependence.
GoSun, an Ohio-based company, has launched a new all-electric utility tractor aimed at small-scale farmers and property managers. The vehicle, developed in partnership with Indian manufacturer Moonrider, is designed to replace diesel-powered utility vehicles by offering a quieter and lower-maintenance alternative. The core innovation lies in its ability to harvest energy from the sun, potentially reducing the frequency with which the vehicle needs to be plugged into an electrical grid.
The Moonrider 27 All-Electric Solar Tractor features a 20 kW electric motor, equivalent to approximately 27 horsepower, which drives all four wheels to provide traction on varied terrain. It includes a 540 rpm power take-off (PTO) system at the rear, allowing it to operate a wide range of standard farm implements such as mowers, tillers, and post-hole diggers. This compatibility with existing equipment is a significant feature, as it allows owners to utilize attachments they may already possess, reducing the barrier to switching from diesel models.
Solar charging extends daily runtime
The tractor runs on a 24 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, which GoSun states provides up to five hours of continuous operation. For many hobby farms, this duration covers a full day of work. When the battery depletes, the vehicle can be recharged using a standard 220/240V AC connector. However, the optional 1.1 kW solar panel array mounted on the roof can generate enough power to add approximately 1.5 hours of runtime on a sunny day.
For users with intermittent work schedules, this solar input may be sufficient to maintain battery levels indefinitely, meaning the tractor could go days or even weeks without requiring a grid charge. While this does not eliminate the need for charging entirely, it significantly reduces dependency on external power sources for light-duty applications.
Power limitations in heavy tasks
Despite the efficiency gains, the 27 horsepower output limits the vehicle's utility for heavy agricultural loads. It is positioned specifically for small-scale farming and property management rather than large-scale commercial agriculture. The trade-off for the quiet, zero-emission operation is a reduction in raw pulling power compared to larger diesel tractors, making it unsuitable for demanding fieldwork or heavy towing.
Market entry and practicality
Electrek notes that electric farm tractors have struggled to find a foothold in the market previously, often due to cost or capability gaps. GoSun argues that the current timing and integrated solar technology address these pain points by lowering operational costs and protecting soil and air quality. The company’s CEO, Patrick Sherwin, emphasized that the goal is to empower land managers to work in the sunshine while reducing reliance on costly diesel fuel.
The practicality of the design hinges on the user’s specific workload. For those who use the tractor lightly and frequently, the solar array offers a compelling cost-saving feature. For heavier users, the vehicle remains a conventional electric machine that requires regular grid charging. The success of this model will depend on whether farmers view the reduced fuel costs and lower maintenance as sufficient incentives to switch from established diesel equipment.
