Silent Patrols: Electric Bikes Reshape African Wildlife Conservation

Rangers in Kenya's Maasai Mara are swapping gas engines for silent electric motors, using solar power to track poachers and protect wildlife without disturbing the ecosystem.
In the tall grass of Kenya’s Maasai Mara, rangers are finding a new advantage in silence. Joshua Kijape, a ranger at Entumoto Safari Camp, now patrols on an electric motorcycle that hums rather than roars. This lack of engine noise allows him to approach wildlife closer without causing stress and, crucially, lets him track poachers before they hear him coming. The shift is part of a broader effort to integrate electric mobility into remote conservation areas, replacing petrol vehicles with units charged by the sun.
This transition is not just about environmental aesthetics; it is a practical response to the logistical challenges of the region. By eliminating the need to ship petrol from distant ports, operators can reduce maintenance costs and fuel expenses while maintaining a quieter environment for both animals and tourists.
Engineering for remote conditions
The electric motorcycles used in the Mara are built by ROAM, a Nairobi-based company, which views the reserve as a rigorous test of durability. The bikes must handle rough tracks, long patrol routes, and harsh weather. ROAM CEO Filip Lovstrom notes that the primary benefit is the elimination of noise, creating a serene environment. However, the technology is not without limitations. The bikes have a range of approximately 160 kilometers between charges, meaning longer patrols require access to charging points.
Charging infrastructure remains a key trade-off. While the bikes can plug into standard 10-amp sockets, this necessitates the installation of small solar and battery systems along patrol routes. Lovstrom compares this to the current necessity of petrol access, noting that electricity is now the new logistical requirement. For now, the reliability of these systems in such demanding environments is being closely monitored to ensure they can support daily operations.
Economic drivers for adoption
Beyond conservation, the economic argument is gaining traction. Loic Amado, co-founder of Emboo River Camp, has used electric safari vehicles powered exclusively by solar energy since 2019. He describes the setup as highly economical, citing lower fuel and maintenance costs. His company, EERA LAB, has expanded this model to support 25 lodges across East Africa, offering solar power, wastewater treatment, and vehicle conversions. This growth suggests that the market for clean transport in remote areas is expanding beyond isolated experiments.
Jason Knauf, CEO of the Earthshot Prize, emphasizes that success in the Maasai Mara serves as proof of concept for wider adoption. If clean technology can prove reliable and affordable in one of the world’s most demanding environments, it strengthens the case for scaling it across other conservation landscapes. The initiative also benefits nearby communities, many of which rely on motorcycles for transport in areas with poor road infrastructure.
Challenges in scaling infrastructure
Despite the benefits, the rollout is not seamless. The need for consistent electricity access means that infrastructure development must keep pace with vehicle deployment. In the Maasai Mara, access to petrol is already difficult, and replacing it with electricity requires careful planning of charging stations. The trade-off is clear: while the environmental impact is reduced, the logistical complexity of maintaining a charged fleet in a remote location increases. Operators must balance the quiet, clean operation of the vehicles with the hard work of ensuring they have power when needed.
